Jeff Davis County High Point Trip Report

Baldy Peak on Mt. Livermore (8,378 ft)
Date: June 2, 2002
Author: Fred Lobdell
This was a nice hike on land owned by The Nature Conservancy. There were 12 of us on this hike,
3 volunteers and 9 hikers. We were driven to Bridge Gap in 4WD vehicles and hiked the remaining distance
to the summit. Bridge Gap is at 7,311 feet, so Edward Earl doesn't have to hike downhill before starting his
climb on this one. The uppermost 200 feet or so of the mountain is all rock, and requires crossing a talus
slope and some Class 2 scrambling in a few places where there is a small amount of exposure. As Mike
Schwartz noted during the hike, this was a good group: there were no whiners and no know-it-alls. I was
afraid I was going to be one of the slowpokes mentioned by Scott Surgent in his report, but although I
started out bringing up the rear, I wound up in the first group to make the summit. There are 3 or 4 more
open dates for this hike this year. The fee is $10 per hiker.
