Buchanan County Highpoint Trip Report

Date: December 18, 2005

I failed to review previous trip reports which resulted in a BUSHWHACK! We parked at the Frank Smith cemetery and headed up an old logging track. We passed through an electrified fence twice and alternated between old briar infested logging paths and the woods. (My son was much happier with the woods.) We made the top of the ridge and headed south along the ridgeline to Big A peak.

At the summit I could see Beartown Mountain, Burkes Garden and the Clinch ridgeline to the east. There was about an inch of snow up higher. I knew there was a road down and we took it! It took about an hour to get to the highway and scamper up to the car. I noticed the temp at the car was 24 but it was a sunny and beautiful day. We headed home after stopping in Honaker for a late lunch. It seems like it was a 3 hour RT hike and my son’s 9th county HP.
