Chesapeake City High Point Trip Report

two areas - 1 7/8 miles SW and 1 3/4 miles W Mears Corner (30+ ft)

Big problems with this one. The northern area should be east of River Birch Run between Eden Way and Boulder Lane. This is behind the Greenbrier Mall, off Greenbrier Road, just south of I-64. The area is totally flat, with the only high ground being the huge man-made berm on which the mall sits. The high point area no longer exists.

The southern area is a mess. The area is now completely developed, and the extensive culture is now shown on the Kempsville quad 1994 edition. The topography was not revised. The new map is not on Topozone. To reach the southern area, enter the St. Andrews housing development just south of the power lines shown on the map, and work your way to the St. Andrews Beach cul-de-sac. The 30+ ft area is a ridge several hundred yards long running between housing developments, with a golf course on it. The highest ground is near the cul-de-sac. As shown on the older topo, the ridge predates the golf course, but it looks man-made, and totally out of place in such a flat area. It may well be the earth excavated from the many ditches shown on the older map. Assuming the 30+ ft contour to be man-made, I drove around to the large 25+ ft. contour 1/2 mile east, via Greenbrier Road, Volvo Parkway, Rellen Street, to Placid Way, which seemed slightly higher than other streets in the area and may be natural.

Reviewing all Chesapeake City topos, I found 29 areas of 25+ ft on three quads, many looking man- made. This county needs a second opinion on the single remaining 30+ ft. area, to decide whether the many 25+ ft areas become the new high point.
