Galax City High Point Trip Report

The high point of the independent city of Galax, VA, lies on the north-northwest ridge of Ward Knob on the southeast side of the city, where the city line crosses the ridge.

From where the combined US routes 58 and 221 cross the city boundary on the northeast side of the city, drive southwest 2.1 miles to a traffic light at Country Club Lane. Turn left (southeast) and follow this road for 1.0 miles to the city line, where it becomes Tower Road. Continue another 0.3 miles to where there is a gravel road on the right passing between two house trailers. (This is easy to miss -- it looks like a driveway for the trailers at first.) Drive up this ungated and unposted road to a fence that stops you from driving right up to the towers. However, this is another one of those deals where only one side is fenced.

Hike down the north-northwest ridge; part way there will be another tower. Continue to the edge of the cleared area; this appears to be 80 to 100 feet below the summit, and the high point of this liner should be somewhere near here.
