Northampton County High Point Trip Report

one tiny area on Butlers Bluff (70+ ft)

Date: February 28, 2001
Author: Michael Schwartz

Access to this area is from US 13, about 4 miles north of the tip of Cape Charles. Reach Butlers Bluff Road via CR 646 and 645 from the north, or 645 alone from the south. Take Butlers Bluff Road 0.8 miles to a point opposite house #3061, where a partially excavated lot has cut through the main line of the bluff. The ground on either side of the cut is the highest around. I checked out the bluff for 1/2 mile in either direction and found nothing higher. For another look at the bluffs, take CR 704 off CR 645 south of Butlers Bluff Road, west to Kiptopeke State Park, and drive out onto the fishing pier that used to be the entrance to the ferry that predated the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Eyeballing will verify the location of the highest part of the bluffs and provides a great view up the shoreline.
