Previous directions will get you there. Insofar as FS-85, which isn't marked at all but is at the top of Briery Gap so it's hard to miss, one could theoretically coax a passenger vehicle up to the top but I really wouldn't recommend it. About 0.25 mile in, at the first major switchback, recent rains have washed the road out pretty severely, necessitating some ground clearance and 4x4. The remainder of the road is very rocky and quite muddy in spots, although would be passable. I would definitely not want to take my own car up there but a rental should make it with no problem. I never did need 4x4 after the first section and was able to fully Martinize the HP with my truck.

I agree with previous posters that the fire ring marks the HP.

To clarify previous reports, VA257 ends at Tilghman Road, although there is no signage heading west. The pavement change marks the changeover of routes from 257 to 924. FS924 is paved all of the way to Briery Gap. It really doesn't matter, however, as you just need to continue straight ahead.
