Waynesboro City Highpoint Trip Report
one newly discovered area (1,880+ feet)

You could simply stop along the edge of I-64 in the westbound lane and try
hiking up the steep bank/ridge from there, but I don't recommend it.
Instead, leave I-64 at Exit 99, and drive north on US 250. As you descend,
you'll go under a railroad bridge. Watch for a gated road on your left,
maybe 500 feet beyond the bridge. Park carefully here, so as not to block
the gate.
Hike up the road, which leads to a cell tower. Continue into the
woods beyond the tower, and pick up a path of sorts that ascends,
then drops, then turns left and ascends again. Don't stop on any summits,
and just keep hiking toward the traffic noise on I-64. As you get near the top,
you'll see a tree stand with a long ladder. The path stops at an old
interstate fence, which has been knocked down in several places. Cross the
fence, and head for the highest part of the ridge off to your right.
I left a blue ribbon tied to a tree on the highest ground, where you can look
straight down on the traffic on I-64. While this is a relatively easy
highpoint to visit, I wondered whether the city boundary is really up at the
highest point on the ridge, or whether the city boundary stops at the
interstate fence that I crossed. If the fence is really the city limit,
the elevation at its highest point is more like 1850 feet, and the highest fence
section is several hundred feet east of the 1880+ summit. Since both points
can be easily accessed, I'd suggest future visitors tag both spots.
