Essex County High Point Trip Report

East Mountain (3,439 ft) on Seneca Mountain quadrangle

Date: August 3, 2001
Author: Bill Schuler

I drove to Granby and asked directions for the road to East Mountain at the grocery store. I was told that it was Radar Road, starting back in Gallop Mills but that there is a locked gate on the road. I inquired who owned the property and was told the person's name, his address in East Burke and his phone # so I drove back to East Burke. The man's name is Ed Sawyer and his phone number is 802-626-9565. When I contacted him, he said that he requires at least 3 day's notice before he would open the gate for anyone. After talking for awhile and pushing the right buttons (county highpointing, all the way from San Diego, no guns, won't leave trash, no parties, etc.) he agreed to drive up there for me. I followed him to the gate and he opened the combination lock and gave me directions asking that I lock the gate when I come out. I gave him $10 for his gas, time and trouble.

From Gallop Mills, just before the Moose River crossing, cross the river and turn left (north) on Radar Road. Zero your odometer. Go right at the Y at 3.8 miles and come to the locked gate at 4.5 miles. Turn right after the gate and follow the main road to the top (about 3 more miles).

Be careful of the buildings on top. The floors are rotten and unsafe.
