Essex County High Point Trip Report

East Mtn (3,439 ft)

Date: July 22, 2002
Author: Michael Schwartz

Ownership of this mountain has changed hands. The new owners are testing the summit area as a possible wind farm and park, and more importantly, have graciously unlocked the gates to the road. The only postings I saw were hand-painted "road closed" signs on the gate posts, which looked faded enough to date back to the previous owner.

From East Burke go about 1 1/2 miles northeast on VT 114, then bear right (east) onto Victory Road, signed 8 miles to Gallup Mills. Drive 7.6 miles to a left (north) onto Radar Road, before the river crossing into "downtown" Gallup Mills. Zero odometer. At the "Y" intersection at 3.8 miles, keep straight ahead (right). At 4.5 is a metal gate, open this date. Zero odometer again.

Soon pass through a second gate, and reach a flat area and a cluster of decrepit buildings at 2 miles. The road is paved, but is deteriorating and has numerous potholes and broken up sections. Nevertheless, it is still easily driven by a 2WD passenger car. Be especially alert for an axle-busting pothole/washout on the right, heading uphill, at about the 2 mile mark. The last 1.5 miles are in better condition. Reach the summit at 4.0 miles and look for highest ground, near the road.
