In Gallup Mills, find where the main road crosses the Moose River. One-tenth of a mile west of this spot, the signed Radar Road heads north up the Moose River valley. There are several junctions along the way, but it is obvious which is the main road for 4.5 miles north to a locked gate. There is parking on the left just before you reach the gate, and the road was passable to our rental Ford Taurus in dry weather.

Signs on the other side of the gate indicate "No ATVs," "No motorized vehicles," "Foot Traffic Only," and that the land is owned by the Essex Timber Company. We took this to allow us to walk to the summit of East Mountain. To do so, simply walk by the gate and turn right, following the usually paved road for approximately 4 miles and 1600 feet of gain to the summit area. It appears that some of the locals use this hike to walk their dogs.
