Essex County Highpoint Trip Report

East Mtn (3,439 ft)

The only available approach is from the south via Radar Road. I attempted to come in originally from the west and found West Mountain Road gated approximately 4 miles before the intersection of West Mountain and Radar. I drove back south and took Victory Road off of 114 to Gallup Mills and took the signed Radar Road north for 4.5 miles to the gate.

I spoke with an outfitter who had keys and he said that the Essex Timber Company had no problems with people hiking the road but that vehicles were not allowed without an escort. This hike is easy enough that I didn't find it necessary to inquire further but there are phone numbers posted on the road closure sign if one wanted to gain vehicular access.

The snow from 2 nights previous made the upper reaches of the road a bit dicey but otherwise this was an easy 2.5 hour round trip to the summit. The actual high ground is a bit hard to locate but I just wandered for about 30 minutes around the buildings in various states of decrepitude and called it even.

Hike statistics: 8.8 miles round-trip, 2.5 hours, about 1,700 feet of elevation gain.
