Alas, the lift wasn't running and they weren't allowing anyone on the access road as they were doing lots of repairs and construction on the mountain. I then got out my maps, etc. and decided to drive to the west side of the mountain. At 0.7 mile south of the of the Grout Pond Parking area there is a good 2 track gravel road with a grass strip in the center, that is gated about 100 yards up the road. The road is an easy hike.

At first you will be traveling northeast. The road has some up & down grades and eventually will make a long curved turn north-northwest. Go about a mile and pick up the Appalachian Trail on the right which takes you to the summit. The trail is marked but be alert as it would be easy to miss. Mike Schwartz's report has the summit information. The lady ranger Jean was there and I enjoyed a lengthy conversation with her.
