Outagamie County High Point Trip Report

Date: April 1, 2002
Authors: John Mitchler and Wendy Hecht

Just north of Appleton and Lake Winnebago in east central Wisconsin, this highpoint is an impressive rise on flat terrain and is easy to do.

From Appleton, take US45 north passing through Greenville. Two miles northwest of Greenville, watch for North Road. Turn right (north) onto North Road and go a mile and a half to Grand View Road. Turn right (east) and go a quarter mile, immediately gaining ground to the hilltop that hosts the highpoint. The high ground is at the southwest corner of the intersection of a dead-end lane with Grand View Road, and it is mowed and provides an impressive view of the surrounding country. Try to hand-level at the hill 2.5 miles south-southwest. We spoke to a local resident who said they use the phrase, "highest point in Outagamie County" when asking for UPS delivery or emergency services.

The second area is located on a hill south of US41. From Grand View Road, take North Road south for two miles, crossing US41 in the process. Turn right (west) on Hillview Road and go 1 mile. Turn left (south) on Manley Road and go a quarter mile to the hill. We did a novel maneuver. We visited the farm of Ron & May Meverdens on the hill in section 5, located 3/4 miles north of the second area. From that farm, I hand leveled both hills. The area on Grand View Road appears to be higher than the area on Manley Road, to such an extent that I would credit anyone that has just visited the Grand View Road area. This area is the one that appeared in earlier versions of Andy Martin's ever-changing book. Ron had heard that his farm was the highpoint (it's not; it's 940+ feet) and that Mosiquito Hill in New London might be the highpoint (it's not; it's about 970 feet).
