Vilas County High Point Trip Report

Note: Wisconsin was having a three-day rifle deer hunt this weekend. Blaze orange gear was mandatory for safe hiking.

I used Roy Schweiker's directions to these areas. For the first, the side road he referred to is Forest Road 2201. To shorten the bushwhack at the cost of 50' of gain, continue north another 0.4 miles on 2201 to within 100 feet of the fork with Forest Road 2563. Look for blue surveyor's blazes and follow them uphill directly to the summit.

For the second area, start from where WI 70 joins US 45 on the east side of Eagle River, go east 7.5 miles on WI 70 to a left (north) onto Forest Road 2178. Zeroing the odometer, on FR 2178 go straight ahead at 1.9 miles onto the dirt road, following the sign for Spectacle Lake Campground. Go straight ahead again at 2.9 miles, and reach FR 2472, as mentioned in Roy's report, at 5.7 miles. I was able to drive 2472 about 1/2 mile before being defeated by the mud. A higher clearance vehicle could easily drive all the way to a point just north of the high point hill. Hike north and east, eventually taking a right fork onto unsigned FR 2472-A. Go about another 1000 feet past the saddle between the two ridges, and look for a faint track road that approaches the high point ridge. Large four foot high stump at the summit.
