On a two-week trip hitting national parks, birdwatching, and a little
cohping.

May 28
Teamed up with Jon Mann for Maricopa county, AZ. Brown's Peak.
We hiked and birded our way the 1.5 miles to the saddle, then headed up
the main trail to the slot. The going got steeper and steeper, but I
couldn't find a side slot out that looked any better, although one was
seen low, but not checked. We got to one rock blocking the slot about
150 feet from the top of the slot, and upon my climbing up and over it,
Jon said he couldn't do it. I proceeded up the slot to the top, then
scrambled up to the left and through the rocks to the summit. Tricky
finding the route back down, but made it back to Jon, told him he could
do it, and on second try we both went back to the summit. The slot is
doable, but care must be taken in finding the best route at several
spots.

May 30
I had 3 hours allotted for Oracle ridge to the Rice Peak liner, due to
birding most of the morning away, and having to pick up Annette and
Braxton at the Phoenix airport later. After 1 hour and 15 minutes, I
was still 1.4 miles from the summit, so turned around. It was quite
hot, no break from the sun, and although 4.3 air miles to the summit,
the curves add a bit, and the 700 feet lost at the saddle take time to
make up. Sad part is that I had done the saddle down and back up to a
higher, level area of the trail. The birds I saw in the morning made
up for having to turn around here.

May 31
Gila county, AZ Myrtle Point and Promontory Butte
We were able to drive within .7 mile of Promontory Butte, where the
lesser road was blocked by the forest service. We were able to walk
this road almost all the way to the cairn and register.
We then drove toward Myrtle Point, but a huge puddle that looked muddy
and deep blocked the access road 100 feet from Rim Road. We parked and
walked the .55 mile to the rim and other cairn, like the first in a red
can, which we signed.

Harquahala Mountain attempt
As dusk was falling, we started driving the scenic Harquahala byway,
and were able to get 9 miles up the road before a steep section with
even more loose rocks turned us around. We did not want to drive back
down this mountain in the dark. Terrible road; if I return I'll be
doing the hike from the other side.

June 4 Brewster county, TX Emory Peak
After staying at Chisos Mountain Lodge for the night, I got up at
daybreak and headed up the Pinnacles trail. I reached the Emory Peak
trail after 1.5 hours, and another 45 minutes took me to the summit.
The scramble/climb descriptions kept Annette and Braxton from coming,
but I could have gotten them up, as only the very first part of it is
exposed, and really pretty short.

June 13 San Diego county, CA Hot Springs Mtn.
We paid our $10 for the day and drove up within 1.4 air miles of the
summit. A steep downhill with loose rocks and dirt helped us to decide
to park our sedan and hike, so I backed it up to a wide spot and we
parked it. Turns out we could have driven another mile, as that spot
was the worst of the road up to the final switchbacks. We first went
to the tower and looked at the highest rock there, which looked tougher
than what I could handle, then looked around and I saw the forested
hill behind us. I turned on the GPS and thankfully it indicated that
the highpoint was there, so off we went. At the summit boulders, we
explored all sides. I went up the peg and ramp side above the register
to the summit, then tried to get Braxton up that way, but Braxton
couldn't get a good foothold at the final critical move while holding
onto a bolt. Back down. They were done, so I signed the register,
then checked another narrow slot approach they had tried earlier, and I
found it less exposed than the ramp, so went back to get them from
their snack break. We were able to get up into the narrow slot, then
climb on top of a side rock, then a two-foot step across the slot to
the summit boulder's lower slope. From there another summiter was able
to help Braxton up from above while I helped from below, then Annette.
Gravity and care helped everyone down almost unscathed (Annette had a
bleeding scratch on her knee). I went back around and added their
names to the register. The road is really kept up well, although there
were some rocks in the road I tossed out on the way down that would
have made for some bumps on the bottom of our vehicle had we driven
that far. There are a couple of road forks, one main one, that is not
signed, so they could do better marking that junction.

4 county highpoints for the trip, close to 200 species of birds,
including over 12 lifers and 15 new to the US/ABA. Several national
parks and monuments visited. I think Braxton earned 9 Junior Ranger
badges.

I'm trying to copy ACME Mapper topos for my trip to the kovention and all I get is "print preview failed". Is it something I'm doing wrong?

Yes, you are using Chrome which for some reason doesn't like Acme Mapper

Try IE or (probably) Firefox

Why the 2017 Highpointers Konvention Should NOT Be in the Northeast

On August 21, 2017 there will be a total solar eclipse of the sun in a path across the United States stretching from Oregon to South Carolina. For a period of two minutes to two minutes and forty seconds day will turn to night. Most of us have not experienced a total eclipse. What greater way to experience this life changing experience than from a mountain top.

I think this is one time we're it is definitely worth selecting a highpoint that will be in the path of totality. A Northeast Konvention can be delayed one year to 2018 and then resume the schedule. The highpoints that will experience totality include Borah Peak, ID, Gannett Peak, WY, Clingmans Dome, TN, Sassafras Mt, SC and Brasstown Bald, GA.

Read more about the 2017 total solar eclipse at Overview http://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/nation/ http://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/nation/ http://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/nation/

Less than seven years later; on April 8, 2024 another total solar eclipse will occur in the Unted States on a path from Mexico to Maine. The highpoints experiencing totality include Magazine Mt, AR, Taum Sauk Mt, OR, Hoosier Hill, IN, Campbell Hill, OH, Mt Marcy, NY, Mt Mansfield, VT and Mt Katahdin, ME.. Being that this is April there will be no Highpointers Convention. which makes the 2017 total solar eclipse all the more rare.

Dave,

The register you saw on Big Jay, VT was the register for the New England 100 Highest. I signed the register on May 24, 1992 on my second attempt. Prior, to that on July 6, 1991I I had to turn around due to dense fog making it impossible to go on. The second time was the charm for me. The New England 100 Highest include 67 peaks from the Northeast 111 list plus 33 more peaks which are under 4,000 feet in elevation.
