You are so right. It is beyond words. My prayers and thoughts are with everyone and Edwards family. What a loss.

I wish I could say I knew him outside of this list ... like everybody here, I would have liked to.

Nevertheless, his death hits close to home for me as, by great coincidence, I too am heading up to the Arctic soon. By this time next week I should be in Inuvik, NT, under that same midnight sun, making final preparations for a 12-day whitewater rafting trip down the Firth River across northern Yukon from roughly the border to its mouth. Im sure I will not be able to help but think of him.

Edwards tragic death is a reminder to be careful, that anything can happen, even to the most experienced hikers.

I learned of Edward's shocking and untimely death yesterday via a phone
call from Gerry Roach. I am very sad and overwhelmed by this news. I
climbed with Edward a number of times between 2001 and 2004, including
Granite Peak (MT) and a bunch of New Mexico peaks. I had not seen him again
until last February's memorial for Adam. And now, he is gone too. I can't
find the words to express my feelings at this point. It does not feel real.

I only recall hiking with Edward one time, when he came out east for the Maine Konvention of 2013. He and I were half of the 4-man group who made the trip up Croydon Peak. (Ken Oeser and Thomas Harper completed the group). If I recall correctly, it was Edward who initiated interest in the climb, so without his efforts, I likely would still have that one on my wish list.

Then a few days later, he showed his hospitality toward me at the Konvention in Maine. I arrived in town without having made reservations beforehand. Edward was gracious enough to allow me to share his room for two nights.

Apart from his climbing accomplishments, he joins Adam in removing a second brilliant mind as a resource to our hobby. His posts were always appreciated. I have a softness in my heart for the math geeks among us. Rest in peace, E^2..........

I never met the man, but I did exchange emails with him a few times. I am one of the few to have hiked Mount Earl, Iowa's peak that's least likely to be the most prominent while still in contention, and because it bears his name I have always thought and will think of him when I think of that place. I maintain that it is the best hike in Iowa.

Keep on calculating and may the rest of us make it home safe,

-Gustav

I never had the chance to meet Edward, or get to know him online, but was still saddened to hear of his passing and of the loss of another icon of county highpointing. My thoughts go out to those who knew him well...

So sad to hear the news about the tragic loss of Ed Earl. We lost two giants in COHPs within only five and a half months. I was fortunate to meet Ed Earl at the Highpointers Convention in Maine, two years ago.

Reading Ed's biography and having met Ed in person I found it striking that Ed and Adam shared a lot of the same background and interests. Both Adam and Ed were born in New York and left the New York area early in life as their family relocated in the case of Adam to Michigan and Ed to South Carolina before ultimately ending up in the San Diego area, with Ed then moving on to Seattle. Both Adam and Ed were socially introverted you can say nerdy but I mean that in a good way.

Both Adam and Ed possessed the sharpest of minds and went into mathematics and physics. Both Adam and Ed ultimately discovered their passion for hiking the mountains and ultimately became the best of friends traveling the world together.

It is with somewhat bitter irony and a profound loss to us all that both Adam and Ed were lost to us this year albeit under widely different circumstance.

May both Adam and Ed rest in peace and we should live up to their ideal by pursuing the pursuits of highpoints and our love for the mountains.

God bless Adam. God bless Ed.

Memories of Edward Earl

I was fortunate to have hiked with Edward once. Had the pleasure of guiding him to the six Passaic County highpoint candidate, the most rewarding hike of any of the NJ cohps. He schlepped his famous hose level up the hills, and we got to use it on a pair of highpoints a hundred or so feet apart, but which were not visible to each other due to undergrowth. To my surprise, it showed that the point I thought was lower was actually higher. I was impressed at his ingenuity and caring enough to drag all the paraphernalia up to the summits. He was amused by my amazement and loved being able to nail down an accurate comparison of the two points.

We followed up those points by driving over the Hamburg Mountains highpoint in Sussex County, a secondary candidate for the NJ state prominence title. There we were blessed by spotting a sow black bear with two cubs who all took off the moment they spotted us. All in all a fine day in the mountains with a good guy.

I have also used many of Edward's trip reports and know that they are always reliable.

Big, big loss to the peakbagging community.

R.I.P., Edward.

This is utterly devastating news. I'm heart-broken. We have lost yet another
giant from our midst. I have such great memories of many shared adventures.
Will send a link to my photo album when it is ready.

Rest In Peace my friend. You are greatly missed!

Subject: Very Sad News

List Owner,

I must report the dreadful news that Edward Earl has drowned in a river
crossing attempt in the Arctic.
The accident occurred on Saturday, June 20th.
Details are still sketchy, but here is what I know from phone calls with
Beckie Covill, who has been taking Sat phone calls from Dave Covill in the
Arctic.
The party was on their way out from their attempt on Mount Isto.
Greg Sladen made it across the river first.
Edward went second and was hanging on to a rope with arm strength.
I do not know the configuration of the rope set up, only that Edward was not
tied into the rope.
Edward lost his footing and was left hanging onto the rope.
Presumably, he had his pack on, which would have made his predicament
tougher.
Finally, he lost his grip on the rope, and went downstream.
Greg on one side, and Dave Covill plus Jill Webster on the other bank gave
chase downstream.
Dave and Jill were able to get Edward out of the water some 300 feet below
the rope point.
They tried for an hour to revive Edward, but to no avail.
A rescue chopper came in, flew Dave and Jill across the river, then flew out
with Edward's body.
Dave, Jill, and Greg hiked back to their fixed wing landing spot where they
spent Saturday night.
They were supposed to fly out late Sunday.
Dave and Greg were trying to call Edward's brother Jim. I don't know if they
have succeeded.
Word has leaked out, and a posting from an old college friend has appeared
on Edward's Facebook page.

It's time to rally around all involved in this tragic time.

Anyone interested in hiking some west-central Arkansas cohps this
coming weekend? Looking at my map, I need several of the counties on
national forest land there, and will be heading that way Friday night
through Monday.
