I just today returned from a 44-day excursion to Alaska, to be met by the shocking and tragic news of EE's untimely death. I only met him once, at the 2013 Maine HP convention. We had a relatively brief friendly chat, although I never had the opportunity to hike with him. He seemed like a thoroughly decent guy, and our hobby will be the poorer for his loss. I offer my sympathy and condolences to his family and friends.

Memories of Edward Earl

Like many of you I'm having a tough time coming to grips
with the fact that my friend of nearly 20 years
is really gone.

The first hike I went on with Edward was certainly
memorable. This was on Mount Wrightson south of Tucson,
with my family and the family of Ken Jones. Edward
let us pile into his truck, which was better suited
to reaching the Gardner Canyon TH than our sedan.

Another early venture was up North Palisade in 2000
with my friend Guy and Edward's friend Adam. We were
lucky to have Edward along on summit day, as he led
the toughest pitches. Edward was a much better
rock climber than run-of-the-mill peakbaggers like us.

In 2001 I accompanied Edward and Adam to the top
of Chiricahua Peak, where Edward completed the AZ
COHP list. It was a challenge to keep up with those two !

Edward was heavily involved in prominence
from the get-go, and his Winprom program was a great
aid to listing work. This was particularly true when
trying to locate the greatest prominence in places like
Iowa or Kansas, which are terrifying to
contemplate working on with just paper maps.

"Mount Earl" was unofficially named in honor of his IA work

and provides a very pretty view of the countryside.

In 2004 Edward led a large crew of peakbaggers up the high point
of the Channel Islands CA. I recall the big
cheer of appreciation we gave him after snagging
the peak. He did a lot of great prep work in
setting that one up.

One of my favorite pics of Edward is this one
of the group he climbed McDonald Peak MT with:

and attached

Standing from left are John Stolk, Charlie Winger,
Tim Worth, John Hamman and Edward.
Kneeling are Grant Myers and Adam Helman.

This is a real "Dream Team" of speedy peakbaggers,
and Edward fits right in.

My thoughts go out to Edward's family, his friends of both personal
acquaintance and online climbing discussions, and of course Greg and Dave.

I couldn't have kept up with Edward on a serious undertaking, but I was
lucky to have met him and enjoyed some off-season (low) Washington stuff
with him over the last several years. They were mostly group outings, but
I did get to share one climb with just the two of us. We were going to
head for some islandbagging in the San Juans and Edward was...
overprepared. His ferry schedule was newly printed and hadn't yet gone
into effect. We missed our boat and wound up climbing Gold Mountain above
Darrington. I am so glad that we Earlized. :)

I have another group shot to share with everyone, another islandbagging
outing from last year. It, too, is a who's who. Luckily I took the shot
and wasn't in the frame, because one of the things on that boat was not
like the others! L-R: John Roper, Edward, Greg Slayden, Paul Klenke, Ken
Russell, Grant Myers, and Craig Willis.

RIP Edward. Your climbing legacy far surpasses your climbing resume.

Ryan

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words and thoughts about our dear and beloved friend.

Dave, Greg, and Jill are still in Alaska and are still utterly devastated and heartbroken. We have been trying to get home for the past three days and have been frustrated by the usual hassles of arranging last-minute travel. We are finally leaving Fairbanks tonight and will be home on Wednesday.

We are still processing our thoughts and will be in a very dark place for a while. The horror of the recent events is beyond description and will be with us for the rest of our lives.

The email from Gerry Roach was mostly accurate--Edward was in the river for about 3/4 mile, not 300 feet--but key is that it was a terrible accident and the result of many seemingly small decisions and actions by our entire team that accumulated to a tragic conclusion. We don't feel it is appropriate to share further details in this forum. You can contact Dave, Greg, or Jill directly if you want to talk about Edward or our trip

Edward was a prolific mountaineer, a brilliant mind, a man of many talents, and a true friend and companion. To us, it simply does not seem right, like a bad nightmare that never goes away. The hole he leaves in our hearts and our community is enormous.
