Greg,

Thank you for taking the time on this forum to let us know how you, Dave, and Jill are handling this tragedy.
Edward was a great person and will be dearly missed by many people.

You each all have a lot of friends here who care about you and will help you get through this.
We are all a part of the same family. Edward was part of that family and so are each of you.

Take care, my friend.

Best Regards,

Craig E. Willis

I was surprised and saddened to hear of the death of Edward Earl.

Edward Earl himself remarked a few months ago that he had parted with Adam Helman not on the best of terms. Hopefully they have reconciled now...

My experience with Edward Earl: Quite slight. Even when I was more fit I barely could manage the easy stuff that Edward Earl did, in mountaineering or career.

I met Edward Earl twice. The first time was when he moved to Seattle. We met for supper at a restaurant, and I then 'guided' him to the highest point in the City of Seattle. It can be approximately 'Martinized', no chance that it can be Earlized, though one day I did hike from sea-level up to the top of it.

Before the second time Greg Slayden, Eric Noel and I climbed to the top of Wahkiakum county WA, Huckleberry Ridge. I was the one who ventured in one direction and found the BM up there; I think Greg and Eric would have just hiked down and missed it.

I met Edward Earl the second time at a party after that and we discussed Wahkiakum county. He was dismayed that his Washington state completion was blown up. A few weeks later he went up Huckleberry Ridge again, taking his hose level, and he showed that the BM is higher than the base of the utility building that everyone sees up there.

My last contact with him was a brief exchange on his Facebook page a few weeks ago, on the topic of food waste in America.

I am acquainted with and have hiked with both Dave Covill and Greg Slayden. I hear that hiking in Alaska is several grades 'more' than the hiking I have done with them. Since they were on the hike out we can presume that they had all crossed the same river successfully before on the way in. ... I would like to see the account of this in next year's 'Accidents in North American Mountaineering'.

Thoughts on Edward Earl, and proposed memorial service in Washington

To group members,

It is very sad to hear of the death of Edward Earl. I am not sure what to
say about this. I wish I had made a better attempt to get in touch with
Edward, and perhaps meet up with him, when I moved to the Seattle area in
January 2014.

I know that the group recently hosted a memorial service and hike for the
late Adam Helman in the San Diego area this past February.

I am thinking that it would be appropriate to host a similar event in
memory of Edward this summer in Washington. What are suggestions on how to
host this event? My first thought would be memorial hike to the summit of
Mount Daniel, highest point of King and Kittatas Counties, which is a
mountain that I completed last summer. Another option is Earl Peak
<http://www.summitpost.org/earl-peak/247776> (7,036), which of course is
not named for Edward but which has an eponymous name.

Please contact me with suggestions. My numbers are below. Text messaging on
my cell is a great way to contact me.

Beyond a Seattle based memorial I'd also like to throw out the idea of having some type of memorial get together for Adam and Edward around the Highpointers convention next month.

Mihai,

I agree that Mount Daniel will be a fitting tribute. I know that this is a
hard hike, but doable by most people.

I would like to plan this, and August will be a good time to do this.
However, we cannot do it during the weekend of August 14-16 because that is
the weekend of the Geocaching block party events in Fremont and Iron Horse
State Park.

Are there any geocachers among us in either the Prominence or COHP groups?
I still would like to produce both the Adam Helman and Edward Earl memorial
geocaches.
