My friends, this has indeed been a very rough week. We have lost a
brilliant mind, a compassionate soul, a polite gentleman, and a passionate
peakbagger. Edward was all that and so much more.

I will compose more thoughts later, but I wanted to relate something of
interest. Beckie & I drove up to Boulder CO today, to see the live
streaming video feed of the Grateful Dead's first of their five final shows
ever, on their 50th anniversary, from Santa Clara CA tonight. $5 to get
in, such a deal.

As we walked from a Mex restaurant to the Boulder Theater, I noted a street
busker on the Pearl Street Mall (closed to vehicle traffic, people perform
there all the time). She had a typewriter on her lap, vintage 1940's. She
had a sign that said "Pick a Subject, Get a Poem". I was in a hurry to get
a table and not have to stand all night, but we stopped for maybe one
minute, and I explained the terrible tragedy, and gave her a brief synopsis
of Edward. She said she would compose a poem for him, and I was to meet
her when we got out of the show three hours later. The following is what
she came up with, after a one-minute chat with me, having never met
Edward. I thought it was pretty cool:

********************

For Edward

Dying as he lived
in full color --
we cannot say of him
that he never tried--
a fate worse than death--
No, his eyes were widely
watching for the next adventure,
for a new skill to pick up
out of curiousity, only
to become master of it--
Who is so teachable?
Yet always within reach
his smile
taming tornadoes
or riding them
wild
as a gunslinging
cowboy
saying "yes,
please fill me
up life--"
I won't be done
until I'm gone ,
and when I'm gone
they'll say
I was always young."

I thought that she captured Edward's essence rather well, given that she
had practically nothing to work with except for my hurried blathering. I
believe she sensed both our sadness, as well as all that Edward had to
offer the world, and crafted it into a poem, just like that.

Edward is gone, just like that, and nothing can bring him back. If only
that weren't so; but alas it is.... For all of you who knew him, here's a
virtual e-hug to each and every one of you. See you in WA someday soon
perhaps, or in Iowa, or further on down the road. Keep Klimbin', as Jakk
would say.
