I found several nice photos of Adam Helman and Ed Earl. on separate County Highpointing Trips that I was accompanied by with Adam and Ed. The photos of Adam were taken in May 2012 when Adam visited Mike Schwartz and I in New York as part of a nine county highpointing binge in one day. The photos of Ed Earl were taken on East Turner Mt in Penobscot, ME in July 2013 as part of the Maine Highpointers Konvention.

I tried posting both sets of photos but I'm not sure if everyone has access to them. If you would like these photos of Adam and Ed please e mail me at highpt43@optimum.net.

Edward's death was of course quite tragic. In the hope that it will never happen again within our group, I pass on some advice given to my backpacking group two years ago by a backcountry ranger near the Muir Ranch on the John Muir trail. There one must wade across the San Joaquin River. Although only knee deep, one poor soul drowned there that year, under circumstances I suspect were similar to Edward's.
The ranger said that whenever crossing a stream one should unhitch any waist and shoulder strap, as well as make sure that shoulder straps are not super snug. A backpack becomes an anchor when one drops into water, so one must maximize the chances of detaching from that anchor should the need arise.
