Hawaii trip report

Red Hill on Haleakala, Maui County, Hawaii (10,023 feet) (April 25, 2015)

This is essentially a drive-up, but it was a second attempt for me. I had previously attempted this one 50 years and 3 weeks earlier, but had turned back after encountering a snowstorm above 8,000 feet. I had no such misfortune this time.

Directions: From the airport at Kahului, turn left (east) on HI 36. Take this about 2 miles and turn right (southeast) on HI 37. Go about 8 miles and turn left (east) on HI 377. About 6 miles of this highway will take you to HI 378. Turn left (generally east) and follow the twists and turns to the summit area. From here it is a short walk to the enclosed observation platform. I thought the high ground was a short distance west of the observation platform.

This was part of a quick hit-and-run visit to the Aloha State. My three main objectives were (1) visit Kalawao and Kauai counties, thus completing the state for Extra Milers purposes; (2) see a Nene (Hawaiian goose, the state bird); and (3) ascend Haleakala. Originally I had listed a fourth objective (climbing Mauna Loa) but as I couldn't find another fool -- er, intrepid adventurer -- with whom to share lodging, vehicle expenses, and the hike, I cut back my trip by two days and omitted the Big Island from my itinerary. My schedule:

Wednesday, April 22: Fly from Raleigh-Durham, NC to Honolulu, arriving around 2:30 p.m. local time. Checked into motel and spent some time birding the park areas south of the motel.

Thursday, April 23: Fly to Kauai and pick up rental car. Drive to the south shore and through Waimea Canyon and Koke'e state parks. Hike the Pihea Trail. Drive to north shore and visit Kilauea Point NWR. This is where I saw my Nene, in fact, a couple of dozen of them, some of which seemed to have a desire to get run over. Return to Honolulu that evening.

Friday, April 24: Fly to Molokai and pick up rental car. Drive east on HI 460 about 4 miles and turn left (northeast) on Hi 470. Follow this road to its end in Pala'au State Park, the only state park on Molokai. Somewhere on this drive in the state park, the road passes over the unmarked county line from Maui County into Kalawao County. The short hike to the overlook took me even further into Kalawao. Doing this saved me both time and money, as I didn't have to endure the mule ride or hike down to the site of the former leper colony, now a National Historical Park. From here I returned to HI 460 and did some bird watching along the south coast of Molokai. Returning to the airport, I flew a puddle jumper operated by Mokulele Airlines the short distance to Maui.

Saturday, April 25: Drove to the top of Haleakala. (See first two paragraphs above.) Afterwards I birded Kahana Pond state wildlife sanctuary between the Kahului airport and the town. I then drove to the south shore of the "neck" connecting the two parts of Maui where I birded Kealia Pond NWR.

Sunday, April 26: I had built in an extra day to my schedule in case I hadn't seen a Nene the previous day on Haleakala. I hadn't, but as I had seen them on Kauai, I had most of the day free before returning to Oahu that afternoon. I returned to Kealia Pond wh ere I met a nice local couple and spent most of the morning birding the area with them.

Monday, April 27: I again birded the park area south of the motel before returning to the airport, where I caught a flight back to the mainland. This flight was divided into three parts, and I managed a two or three hour nap on the Los Angeles to Minneapolis leg. I arrived back at Raleigh-Durham around mid-morning on Tuesday, ransomed my car from long-term parking, and drove home.

Birding: I identified 36 species on this trip, 20 of which were new "lifers" for me. Seeing the Nene made Hawaii the 42nd state in which I've seen the state bird.

Airport security: I found it to be most officious in Honolulu and Kauai , and non-existent in Molokai.

Cost: I estimated my cost to be in the neighborhood of $2,300. This would have been cheaper if I had had someone with whom to share some of the expenses, and more expensive if I had gone on to the Big Island. It would also be cheaper for those of you who live on the West Coast rather than on the East Coast.

Baggage: I flew with just one carry-on bag. This saved time and the possibility of lost luggage at airports. It meant that I had to omit some items (e.g., razor blades and bug spray) but the convenience made up for the omitted items.

Congrats, state completers!

I have been on the road for 44 days (May 11 through June 23) going to and from Alaska and traveling around that state. I am finally getting caught up on what's been happening in the world of county highpointing in my absence. I would like to recognize the following people who completed the county HPs of one or another of the states.

Mary Maki completed California on May 3 in Yolo County. She is the 30th completer of the Golden State and the first to fini sh in Yolo County. California has now been completed in 21 of its 58 counties.

Connecticut was completed by Dick Oestreicher on May 7 in Litchfield County, and by Beckie Covill on May 21 in Windham County. They are, respectively, the 51st and 52nd completers of the Nutmeg State.

Josh Carlson completed the county HPs of Iowa on December 28, 2014, in Dubuque County. He is just the third person to finish the Hawkeye State.

Maine was completed by Beckie Covill on May 21 in Sagadahoc County. She is the 20th person to finish the Pine Tree State.

Beckie also completed Massachusetts on May 21 on Mt. Wachusett in Worcester County, becoming the 30th finisher of the Bay State.

Also on May 21, Beckie finished New Hampshire on Copp le Crown Mtn. in Strafford County. She becomes the 38th to finish the Granite State.

Peter Barr completed North Carolina on May 23 in Rutherford County. He is just the 2nd person to complete the Tar Heel State.

Ben Lostracco finished Ohio in Hocking County on March 19. He is the 4th person to complete the Buckeye State and the first Canadian to do so.

Rhode Island was completed on May 5 by Dick Oestreicher in Bristol County, and by Beckie Covill on May 21 in Kent County. They are the 65th and 66th completers of the Ocean State.

Finally, Vermont was completed on May 19 in Orange County by Stony Burk; on May 20 in Franklin County by Dave Covill; and on May 21 in Orange County by Beckie Covill. They are, respectively, the 31st, 32nd, and 33rd completers of the Green Mountain State. You'll note from the dates that Beckie completed all 6 New England states in one (long!) day. Also, I haven't made an exhaustive search of my records, but I think this is the first time a state has been completed on th ree consecutive days by three different highpointers.

Hearty congratulations to all!

Congratulations to ALL state completers! I tip my hat to all of you. For you Beckie Covill, I give also a deep bow of respect. The planning and execution of your feat was certainly no small task. You Covills' do some really neat stuff....
