I would suggest to anyone looking to do counties in that area this time of year to bring a 10 gallon bucket to stand on. Otherwise there is next to no way to tell without a gps where you actually are in all of the corn fields. You will have a 50/50 shot that every highpoint field you come across will be corn, with the other 50% being beans, . There are plenty of highpoints in that SD/MN/IA area that are not too far into the fields, but the majority are. On a nice fall weekend it is easy to get 30+ counties in that area, but be prepared for half of that given you are dealing with 10 foot tall corn right now.

Starting Monday, July 20th, my plan is to leave the Minneapolis area and start in Swift County (MN), work my way to Richland (ND), then head south through South Dakota, bagging counties along the way. The goal is to make it to Lincoln (SD) or land in Worthington at the Konvention hotel for check-in on Thursday, July 23rd, whichever comes first. Then I hope to join whatever counties are planned for Friday, attend meetings and the banquet on Saturday, and bag a few more counties on Sunday on my way back to Minneapolis.

I have been trying to locate the trip reports Mark Ness published for Minnesota and his surrounding midwest adventures. I have found some links that do not lead anywhere.

I also found the above obituary. Can anyone here confirm whether or not this is the same person? Thanks.

That photo does not look at all like the Mark I met some years ago up at High Point NJ. Bob Schwab hiked with Mark in MN and can also weigh in on this. If memory serves, those links to Mark's reports have been dead for a long time.

One of his trip reports on cohp.org mentions his 4-yr old son Matthew was
with him (this in 2004). The obituary does not mention a son named Matthew.
I suspect this is a different Mark Ness.

St Lawrence County, New York - Mt Matumbla Trip Report
Tue Jul 7, 2015 9:08 am (PDT) . Posted by:
Dasaan
Did Mt Matumbla on the 4th of July. As I did this one the long difficult way, St. Lawrence was definitely the most difficult cohp in New York for me because of all the blowdown. I had an easier go at Herkimer as I had access to the private lands south of the mountain (3 mi round trip). Only three left to complete New York! Two on Long Island in two weeks and then Mt Lyon in August, for the finish!

----
2015-07-04 Mt Matumbla 2688ft

Started at the Pitchfork Pond trailhead. Plenty of parking. Folks were present at the cabin at the start of the snowmobile trail. Asked to walk back along the trail; they happily granted permission. I think access is fairly well guaranteed along the snowmobile route and shouldn't be an issue for anyone. Walked west to the four-way junction and on through past a green, unoccupied hunting cabin. Passed a piped spring on the north side of the road and shortly after took the overgrown track to x1879ft and down to the low wetland area. This old road is fairly well grown over and complicated with other old roads; however, I did not have difficulty following it, especially noting the few orange flags previously placed along the route. I crossed the low area just at the north end. No standing water, just open grassy tussocks. Did not particularly note the road indicated on the topo running along the base of the mountain, so I headed uphill, angling somewhat to the west. However, the nature of the slope pulled me to the north. I crossed the red blazed county line at the small drainage at 1810ft, and began angling more strongly to the west. The terrain became more steep and rocky and eventually more riddled with blowdown. I passed just to the east of the cliffy area between 2400 and 2500 ft and continued up to near x2624ft to get a bearing on the actual summit. Once above 2500ft, the blowdown and spruce became more pronounced and thick hindering movement considerably. Just to the west of x2624ft the drop revealed the actual summit. The saddle across to Mt Matumbla is very thick and difficult to traverse. I did at one point find a track that lead to the west and then northwest away from the route. I topped the closed contour at 2530ft east-northeast of the summit and crossed a sphagnum bog over to the ridge running northwest from the summit. Progress was less obstructed until reaching a 15-20ft cliff face and cave up to the summit area. I traversed left through a small notch up to the summit area. The blowdown and uneven terrain here was difficult to cross. Several highspots (marked with flagging) were noted and climbed. However, a large boulder out in an open area and the thickest blowdown seemed to be the true summit, by a clear margin. I descended a different route straight down the southeast slope of the mountain, which was thick and difficult at first but eventually steepened and became more open. Near the base of the mountain, I followed a small steam down to a good road at the base of the mountain. Here I turned right, and passed a small cabin with a 'Cocktails' sign on it before reaching a three-way intersection with the original snowmobile trail to Pitchfork Pond. I turned left and followed this easily back to the trailhead.

I fully agree with Alan Bernier's report on Peakbagger, take the snowmobile trail to the base of the mountain and begin your climb there. There is no need to go over x1879ft. I also noted no posted signs along this entire route.

Folks,

Got back yesterday from a 2 week trip during which I tagged a few summits.

It's June 21 (Father's Day). My son Erik and I are driving between summits. He announces that he has a

message on his cell phone, listens to it and puts it to my ear as I drive. It's Gerry Roach. Edward has drowned

in the Arctic trying to cross a river after an attempt at Mt Isto with Dave Covill, Greg Slayden and Jill Webster.

He gave a few particulars. And would I post this as he couldn't, not being a member of the yahoo groups?

I actually got another call that day while climbing with Erik via Erik's cell phone. It was my ex-wife wishing

me happy Father's Day.

Dave had called his wife Beckie. She had called Gerry. Gerry had called my home where he got my friend Peggy

watching over my place while I was gone. She knew I was with Erik and gave Gerry Erik's cell number.

Erik and I tried to call Gerry later but got no answer and we didn't leave a message. I told Erik that with news this

drastic they'd quickly find others to post and they certainly didn't need me in the loop. And that was, indeed, the case, as all who have read the posts know.

I met EE through Adam Helman. The three of us went on a trip to Costa Rica February-March of 2002 to do Chirripo,

Irazu, Chato and Poas. It was on this trip that I experienced the first symptoms that eventually resulted in a

stent being put in one of my arteries in Phoenix.

Edward did Mt Cleveland with Dave Covill, Tim Worth and I in August of 2003. In January of 2004 I was

on a trip to Venezuela with Edward and Adam to do Bolivar (5th class) and Humboldt, the two highest peaks

in that country. In July of the same year Edward helped my friend Ken Walters get me up Bonanza, a really tough

Washington State COHP. There were rapelles on the rock down climb and EE went down first to untangle the ropes

so I'd have an easier time of it. One of the things I remember was that after the rapelles a big rock came down

and cut our brand new climbing rope almost exactly in half. Later, at camp it was decided that I would carry

one of the half ropes down and Edward the other. Later we discovered that Edward had left his half at camp

and we reported that to the people at Holden Village. Anyone who found it could have it.

In January of 2005 it was the Dominican Republic for Duarte (HP of the Caribbean), Palona and Yaque with

Adam and EE. In November of the same year Edward did Florida Pk (5th class) in New Mexico with Adam,

Richard Carey, John Harmann and I. Adam, EE, Andy Martin and I did the Palen Mts HP together in April 06.

And it was Mormon Pk in Nevada that brought Helman, Earl, Stolk and I together in April 08.

Others have mentioned Edward's intellect, climbing ability, contributions to peak bagging and list completions.

He had a lot in common with Adam, but they were different as well. EE knew music, but Adam was lost there.

I could relate to Edward in that regard. I've sung in many choirs at university, city and religious levels.

Edward's taste in food was very pedestrian, sort of a mirror image of Adam's sophistication. I'll put myself

between the two.

Edward wrote very good trip reports and I told him so many times. So easy to follow, so precise. Used 'em

many a time. I was fascinated by his interest in COPP's and have referred to his website and listings on that topic many times. Sort of got hooked by it somewhat myself.

What a loss. What a tragedy. He'll be missed.

I can't remember if I posted this link earlier or not. Regardless, I've
added two more photos from our gathering yesterday near Seattle to remember
Edward and celebrate his life. Here's the album link:
