This could be a once in a lifetime spectacle for that should not be missed. Five state highpoints will be in the path of totality; Borah Peak, ID, Gannett Peak, WY, Clingmans Dome, TN, Brasstown Bald, GA and Sassafras Mountain, SC.

Since the Iowa Konvention is at hand and at this Konvention the site of the 2017 Konvention will be selected I would like to make a motion to select consider at least four out of these five locations as the site for the 2017 Highpointers Konvention. Imagine being on top of a highpoint with your highpoint buddies witnessing this jaw dropping life changing spectacle. Think of the photos, the buzz leading up to the Konvention and lasting memories having witnessed this spectacle of the cosmos.

You won't regret. I urge consideration be given to making an exception to the traditional Regional cycle and select the Western or Southeastern Region over the Northeast for 2017 to take advantage of this rare event.

Do I have any one willing to second this? If you would like to make this happen please do speak out on this forum and if you and are attending the Iowa Konvention please nominate Idaho, Wyoming, Georgia or South Carolina as the site of the 2017 Highpointers Konvention.

Thank you.

When Lanny first posted this a few weeks ago, my initial reaction was, "What a great idea!" Now, I'm not so sure.

First, August 21, 2017, will be a Monday, if my calculations are correct. That's an awkward day to work into convention week, but the lure of seeing a total solar eclipse would persuade many of us to hang around for another couple of days.

Second, the HPs mentioned in Lanny's post have some drawbacks. We just did Clingman's last year, and I rather suspect that there wouldn't be an overwhelming desire to return so soon. Sassafras was done in the 1990s. We haven't yet met at Brasstown, but I'm not sure that mid-August is a desirable time of year to be in Georgia. As for the western HPs, I don't know of any town near Borah that would be big enough to host a convention. I suspect that Jackson Hole, not too far from Gannett, has the facilities to host a convention, but that is at the height of the tourist season and I feel sure that the price of motel rooms at that time in Jackson would be in the triple digits, with no guarantee the first digit would be a 1. And that's if any rooms would be available.

However, Lanny, I suggest that you run your idea past some of the movers and shakers in the club, people like, say, Tim Webb and Don Holmes. In order to selec t the 2017 convention site out of order, I think the Board of Directors would need to discuss it and maybe vote to make such a move. Alternatively, they could vote to pass the buck to the attendees at the banquet and have them vote on it. Or they could reject the idea out of hand. This would need to be done quickly, as the banquet and membership meeting is two weeks from tomorrow.

So I offer an alternative suggestion. If West Virginia or Pennsylvania were to be sel ected as the site of the 2017 convention, the banquet would be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017. This would give attendees all day Sunday and even perhaps part of Monday to drive down to the vicinity of the southern HPs mentioned in Lanny's post and position themselves to see the eclipse. And we would be able to maintain the order of the geographic regions for convention sites.

I vote we keep it in the Northeast. 1) I've seen solar eclipses.2) I live in the Northeast.3) Seems easier than meessing around with the schedule. Probably should be scheduled at an earlier or later time so those that wish could attend their eclipse viewing. Just putting in my three cents worth. Two cents just ain't worth what it once was. Bear in mind also that the key item in eclipse watching is clear skies. Mountain tops do not usually offer the best chance for clear skies. The 2017 eclipse, the first one visible from the lower 48 since 1979, is going to be BIG. Anywhere within, say 100 miles of the center line is going to be a ZOO. What I plan to do is find a spot about 200 miles from center line with the best chance of clear skies, and drive to the center line during the wee hours to find a spot to sit and wait for the show. Also will place myself somewhere that allows a quick run, like along an interstate to a point hundreds of miles either way long the centerline in case weather makes that necessary.

It may well already be too late to find a convention hotel on or close to the centerline.

If bad weather becomes an issue, folks would want to bail out from the convention and head for clear skies. That would disrupt the convention, probably fatally.

Don't want to be a naysayer, but having been to four total eclipses, I feel qualified to point out the issues unique to those events.

On the positive side, Lannty is absolutely correct in his excitement about total solar eclipses. They are magical events, worth spending time and money to see. Don't miss this one. Oh, and there is another one in the U.S. in 2024.

When Lanny first posted this a few weeks ago, my initial reaction was, "What a great idea!" Now, I'm not so sure.

In order to select the 2017 convention site out of order, I think the Board of Directors would need to discuss it and maybe vote to make such a move. Alternatively, they could vote to pass the buck to the attendees at the banquet and have them vote on it. Or they could reject the idea out of hand. This would give attendees all day Sunday and even perhaps part of Monday to drive down to the vicinity of the southern HPs mentioned in Lanny's post and position themselves to see the eclipse.

Thank you.

Re: THE 2017 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE - SIGHT OF A LIFETIME

In 1991 I attended the Konvention (have to look up where), and very soon afterwards I flew to Puerto Vallarta Mexico to see a long solar eclipse. It was impossible to get flights etc. to Hawaii island or to Mazatlan. It was possible to fly to Maui or Puerto Vallarta. Totality just barely grazed the not-much-visited southeast coast of Maui. Totality missed the city of Puerto Vallarta, though it just barely touched the airport. But it was easy to get a bus north, find a beach hotel and sit around with a few dozen others until noon until it happened.

Visibility at the mountain top depends on the typical and specific weather of the mountain. In Hawaii or California's Sierra Nevada that is usually visible. In Colorado's Rockies it depends on the time of day. Before noon or late in the day is often clear enough, while noon to suppertime is heavily clouded over. ... Konvention in Idaho/Borah could be likely would be much the same as at Oklahoma/Black Mesa, eh?

Mount Jefferson - Looking For Partners

Currently, I have a Mount Jefferson trip setup for next weekend. Two people are set to join me although one of them is not feeling well. I would like to have 1-2 other people join, especially who can lead any rope/rappel section if needed.

I have Friday-Sunday (July 17-19) off from work. I work & live north of Seattle and would drive down to Oregon. Depending on weather, we might leave from the Seattle area on Thursday afternoon/evening, car camp at the trailhead, then hike to high camp on Friday, and then summit on Saturday. If weather is iffy on Thursday/Friday, then the plan would be to hike to high camp on Saturday, then summit on Sunday and return back to the trailhead that same day.

If plans fall through for next weekend due to either weather or lack of partners, or if our first attempt fails, I have another three-day weekend the following weekend... this time, Saturday-Monday (July 25-27). Unfortunately, I have no partners setup for that weekend as the two who are interested for the first weekend are busy the second weekend. So I would need 2-3 partners for July 25-27.

I only have four CoHPs remaining in Oregon, but three of the four are at Mount Jefferson (two at the summit, one on the north slope). I would really like to complete the Oregon CoHPs this year, if possible.

If interested, feel free to contact me.

Regards,

Craig W.

Sounds like a plan for Thursday, Dave. I'll have my Xterra which holds 5 comfortably, and which has good air conditioning. I'd be willing to drive if another vehicle is needed.

As for Wednesday, my tentative plan is to do the following MN HPs: Rock, Pipestone Nat'l Monument, Pipestone, Lincoln, Yellow Medicine, and Lac Qui Parle (talking water?). Coming back south to Worthington I would hit Murray & Nobles cohps, and maybe throw Jackson into the mix.

Anyone who wants to accompany me will be welcome.

Beckie & I will be travelling from CO to Iowa on Wed July 22nd for the Konvention. We will be driving out I-80 through NE, and possibly visiting Seward & Dodge cohps in northeast NE. There is a small chance we will cut over into Iowa and visit Iowa Prom Point Carroll IA cohp, and 2 miles away Crawford IA cohp, then straight N to Sibley and Hawkeye Point.

We are of course staying at the host hotel, the Comfort in Worthington MN. We can post notices by the Merc there.

On Thur July 23rd I was hoping to spend much of the day cohping. I would like to do some variation of the following. Warning - this is a bit ambitious, but not overly so. FYI - I have a few IA cohps due S of Osceola (Hawkeye Point) but that's it in the area.

>From Worthington MN, head E on I-90 about 100 miles to Faribault and Freeborn MN cohps, both easy. From there, head S then SW into IA, visiting Kossuth (Moderate), Humboldt (Easy), Webster (Mod), Calhoun (Mod), then northwestward to Pocahontas (Easy), Palo Alto & nearby Emmett (both Mod), west a bit to Clay (Mod), north to Dickinson (Easy), up to Martin MN (Easy), west to Jackson MN (Easy) and arrive in Worthington. Total of 13. Possible for part of group to break off and bag Buena Vista, Cherokee, O'Brien IA (all Easy).

For Friday , I would like to get back early, so am envisioning a more modest schedule, sticking to MN. I was thinking of heading northeastward to Watonawan (Easy), Brown (Easy), Cottonwood (Mod), Redwood (Mod), Murray (Mod), and Nobles (Easy), arriving back to Worthington, in a large counter-clockwise circle loop. We could bag the Pipestone Nat Mon HP if people wanted to, and if so could also hit Rock (Mod). Total of 6, perhaps 7-8 places. I want to be back by 3 or so. Others could go on further. I need beer....

A close one I have left off is Lyon IA (Mod) which is not far west of Sibley. Perhaps Saturday morning after breakfast, and before the Hawkeye Point festivities?

There are many more cohps further southwest in Iowa, and northwest in MN and SD. More adventurous souls could test those waters..... Fred Lobdell has mentioned focusing his efforts in the latter direction.

I would like to meet at the Comfort Inn lobby about 7AM on Thursday , perhaps slater on Friday . We could all agree to get breakfast at a convenient spot, perhaps a McDonalds.

Please chime in with your thoughts, if you plan to attend the Konvention. I look forward to seeing many fellow cohpers. I know Ryan Courtney will be there. Beckie too. Maybe Gerry Roach will come, be sure to stick him in your vehicle for a few hours and listen to his stories if he does come.

Dave (this one will be all about quantity, not particularly quality...) Covill

I'll be leaving tomorrow morning to set out on the trip that will eventually take me to Worth ington, MN for the convention. People who need to give me information or who need to discuss stuff can still e-mail me and I'll get the message when I check in with the distaff side in the evening. And if you leave a phone number I'll get back to you.
