KENOSHA COUNTY, WI - NOT OPEN!

The first stop as I headed to the Iowa Konvention was Kenosha County, WI. Let me describe my encounter.

I arrived at the building complex just south of the HP on Wednesday, 7/15/2015. Two men were remodeling the second building north, and they told me to see the owners in the large white house nearest the road. I walked to the back porch and knocked several times. FInally, I was greeted by an elderly woman, and I shared my desire to hike to the HP. She did not think it would be a problem, but she wanted me to check with her husband just to be sure. She welcomed me inside the house and took me to a study where the elderly man was working at his computer.

We had a nice short visit, and he granted access to the HP. I asked about the BM Rasmussen, and he knew it was there. But it has long since been covered by overgrowth, so it was not visible. I asked where was an appropriate place to park, and he directed me to drive up his driveway a bit more toward the HP. I thanked him for his permission, and departed the house to move my car to the desired location.

As I walked off the back porch, I was confronted by a younger man (younger than me, younger than the one who granted access) who drove up on a gator-like 4-wheeler. He inquired about my reason for being here. He was wearing a shirt with the orchard name on it, and he told me I could not visit there.

This second gentleman then told me HE was the owner of the HP, and the others did not have ability to grant access to the HP. We spoke for several moments, but he would not budge.

He never got angry, just firm in his position. I tried several suggestions. I suggested he accompany me to the HP. He declined. I told him I was not there to do damage or create trouble. He told me he had heard that before. I asked if someone from the Highpointers Club could contact him to arrange a suitable way to access the property. He said he did not have respect for anyone from the club. Several had come to his property and proceeded against his wishes, stealthing, approaching from the east, wearing camo, etc. He had heard it all, and he wanted no part of it.

I sensed this man was very frustrated about people not respecting his wishes. I asked if anyone had ever shown the proper respect, and he said it happened one time only. When he told an inquiring hiker he could not access, the hiker turned and walked away. After our conversation, I turned and walked away too.

Folks who have accessed this HP in the past should feel very fortunate if you have indeed sought and gained permission to complete the hike. The true owner of this land has been burned by many in the past, and I don't know what damage control can be applied to change the situation.

Here are a couple of footnotes to the Wade Hampton story that are pertinent to COHPing. Wade Hampton III's second wife, Mary McDuffie, was raised on the McCormick SC COHP, known as Cherry Hill.
Before the McDuffies lived there, Cherry Hill was the home of Dr. Moses Waddel, the teacher at nearby Willington Academy. Over 40 counties (and equivalents) were named for men taught or influenced by Dr. Waddel.
