HP Club Convention - will we be seeing some casual visitors ?

Well, Dick Ellsworth? Bob Schwab? Josh Carlson ? Dawn Howard Sand ? Wendy
Hecht ?

Who else lives in the Upper Midwest? You don't have to even attend the
convention, or register for it. Simply show up at the Comfort Inn, and
hang out with the county highpointing enthusiasts, and come along on the
day trips. So you've finished all the nearby counties? So what, come to
socialize...

See everyone there!

I'll be around. Don't know which days yet for sure. Was planning on trying to register, but the monsoons changed my trip plans and ate the rest of my summer budget so I have just enough to get out there next week.

I saw that in the internet news. I wonder how long it will take them to fix-work-around it, and fix it for real.

Looking at the map, I wonder how much traffic there was across there before the Southern Pacific built a railroad. Sixty or more miles to the south was the Spanish Camino del Diablo (Highway of the Devil), an indication of just how bad those lands were to travel through.

Old US-60 still exists as a frontage for many miles along I-10, but not
consistently to where it could be used today as a detour. There aren't any
other good roads in that area. It appears both bridges covering that wash
will have to be rebuilt. I expect this to last months.

CA-62 is the only feasible and reasonable alternative. It's a two-lane
highway. It will be interesting to see how the cities and little junction
towns handle the traffic it will surely get. For example, the junctions of
US-95 and CA-62 at Vidal Junction is a 4-way stop sign junction. The "town"
consists of an agricultural checkpoint, a scary minimart and a few very
scattered homes. US-95 sees steady truck traffic, CA-62 tends to be light.
But now with all the trucks and cars using CA-62, that 4-way stop is going
to get real popular real fast.
