From the Mineral County Independent-News, Week of July 30, 2015

New Events Planned Week of Mt. Grant Memorial Challenge

Submitted by Kathy Trujillo

This year will mark the fifth annual 9/11 Memorial Mt. Grant Challenge. As
the day of the event approaches, committee members and volunteers are
working out the details of quite a few enhancements to this year's event.

This year a "half" Challenge will be offered for those who prefer not to
tackle the full 17-mile hike on Saturday, September 12. Those who enter the
"half" Challenge will be transported to a designated starting line where
they will tackle 9.11 miles of the route and ascend to the top. Participants
of the "half" Challenge will also receive a finisher's coin, t-shirt, and
support and encouragement along the way. This route include numerous
switchbacks and elevation climbs and offers great views that bring entrants
to the event each year.

Mineral County students will again be asked to participate in this year's
event and they will be looking for "pledges" and sponsorships as part of
their Challenge. Donors will be asked to sponsor students with a one-time
contribution or a "per-mile" pledge. Kyle Isom will be coordinating this
"hike-a-thon" as part of the Challenge.

As Friday falls on 9/11 a Main Street parade is being slated to include a
flag raising and a memorial service at Veteran's Park. Proceeds from this
event are earmarked for the Veteran's Memorial Park and help defray the cost
of maintaining the big American Flag that welcomes everyone at the entrance
to the community. In addition to a 9/11 remembrance, registrants will be
able to pick up their packets and enjoy refreshments and entertainment on
Friday evening.

A special evening with Jesse Ferrell, published author, thought leader, and
internationally recognized inspirational speaker is being planned for
Thursday evening. Jesse will share his blessings of growing up in small town
Hawthorne with the steps in enrolling into a global community and becoming a
global player carrying that Mineral County spirit from the Dominican
Republic to South Africa and many foreign lands in between. This special
event (with more details to be released soon) is being called "A Night of
Inspiration - Overcoming Life's Challenges".

For those who would like to participate, volunteer, or assist in some way
there are plenty of opportunities. Kirk Bausman is heading up the volunteer
forces amd Kathy Trujillo will be coordinating the parade. If you have
questions regarding this event you can send an email to
kathy@911challenge.org. Registration details can be accessed through the
website at www.911challenge.org or www.active.com.

Mount Grant is the county high point and county prominence point of Mineral
County, Nevada.
It is also on a variety of other peak lists:

Connecticut
Litchfield County South Slope of Mount Frissell
July 20, 2015

It was a humid day and I was pretty apprehensive about this climb since I had little class 2 experience, but I made it. Mount Riga Road is closed off from Salisbury. Mapping programs will take one past Bish Bash Falls and through Mount Washington, Massachusetts. Approach from the north.

There were gray clouds but there was no rain. When the sun came out it was very strong. The red-blazed trail keeps one on the proper path.

Up to the Round Mountain summit is the tough part. From there, continue following the red-blazed trail to Frissell.

The skies were getting dark and my apprehension grew but again, no rain.

Going down Mount Frissell, check to the right every so often for the Green Stake, cairn, and ammo box with the log. The Green Stake area is relatively clear and recognizable.

I signed the log, the only one on July 20 that day. There were great views of the Taconics despite the haze and gray clouds.

Connecticut
Windham County Snow Hill
July 21, 2015

The Nipmuck Mountain Laurel Sanctuary sign says that the laurels bloom from May to July. Maybe they should say mid-July, because there were no more blooms when I was there. Before the gate on Snow Hill Road is the turnoff to the towers and the highpoint outside of the fenced area. Follow the fence to the left and ahead to reach the summit.

Grosvenor Avenue is now open past 250th Street to the highpoint area but construction continues, so come after 5 PM or on a weekend. Two brick posts, one with a sign for Villanova Heights, are at the intersection.

The construction gate is past the area now, so I Martinized at the gate and turned around.

Don''t understand what you mean by, "I Martinized at the gate and turn around."

If you only stayed on the road, you did not reach the highpoint. After passing through the stone pillars, one needs to park on the street and amble up the hill to the left which leads to a large outcropping of natural bedrock that is very close (~60 feet) if not at the original highpoint as shown on the topo

Hearty, if belated, congratulations to Teresa Gergen on her completion of the county HPs of UT. Teresa finished the Beehive State on July 17 on Delano Peak, HP of Beaver and Piute counties. She is the 56th person to complete Utah.

The delay in reporting this is my fault, as I was out of town attending the Highpointers convention in Minnesota and Iowa.
