> I know I can ascend most peaks, but it is important to hike fast in order to be able to hike with as many different people as possible.

There is no doubt this is true, and hiking faster means more peaks in a day and quicker to shelter if the weather turns sour.

There is no substitute for conditioning doing exactly what you want to do. Try walking faster when you are alone, or choose a group that is only slightly too fast for you. Or you may discover like I did that it kills the fun of the trip to always push yourself and it would be better just to find a slower group - in a place the size of Seattle, they surely exist!

> I don't have a gym membership right now, but perhaps I should get one.

My former apt complex came with a free gym, and I used to go to aerobics classes or use the Nautilus machines a couple times a week. I didn't notice that it helped my hiking any. But on my way over to the gym I used to walk on top of the curb instead of on the sidewalk, and that made me more confident crossing log bridges!

If I am reading the maps correctly, the firefighters bulldozed a line roughly along the standard route up to the Twin Sisters. Everything north of that terminus burned. http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/pub/cdf/images/incidentfile1161_1664.pdf http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/pub/cdf/images/incidentfile1161_1664.pdf

I agree with that assessment. It also seems that the start of the route through what we thought was a rather amazing grove of Sargent Cypress was not burned. We didn't take the "Milktoast Highway" route along the creek bed...I wonder what that looks like now. I am planning to head out there sometime in the next couple of months, after the fire is well out and the mop up work completed, to check it out, if anybody is interested let me know.

I think it would be of value to a number of us on this forum if you post the results of your visit to the area this fall.

Ken Akerman brought up the topic, writing "However, I
received a comment from someone who was on a hike
that I did to the summit of a fairly large peak (Davis Pk
6,426 feet), and he complained, "However, I noticed
you were falling behind a lot." I feel very bad about my
inability to hike fast, and therefore I am losing opport-
unities to climb mountains. It appears to me that since
there are other hikers (not in COHP) who don't think
very highly of me, I have to climb many peaks by my-
self. Of course, not all peaks can one climb solo, so
I need to develop excellent relationships with other
hikers." and more.

In a sense it is a pity that I no longer live there, and
now live next to 'the other Washington' My big limit-
ation right now is that I get totally fatigued at not much
more than 2,000 ft. of elevation gain. That is my
stamina building goal.

Here is an anecdote that has value for everyone.
Back in 1993 I recruited a co-worker and we went
to Mexico to climb Pico de Orizaba, 18,700' high,
about 4,800' of gain above the hut. My co-worker
told me afterwards that when we started the hike at
about 4:30 am he had more vigor and inwardly com-
plained about how slow I was going. He inwardly
sighed and slowed down to my pace.
. Yet, in the end, I was the one who made it to the
summit and he turned back. I made it up about
30 minutes after he turned back, rather quicker/
sooner than I had expected. When I told him about
it and showed him photographs he said that he
could have, he wished, he had gone further, ...
about 100 ft. mostly horizontal so that he could
have looked down into the crater. (He still doubted
making it to the summit.)

Ken, I'm probably the slowest cohp'er in the group. I find that I do lots of cohp's solo. When I need climbing partners I can usually find great cohp members that I can work out a plan. Actually, I'm very greatful for the many cohp'ers that put up with my slowness. After all, an 85 year old person can only go so fast, especially steep grades and rock climbing. So set your own pace and enjoy the views.

As Jack would say, Keep KLIMBING
