Oceola County Highpoint Trip Report
Grove HIll (1702 feet)
Date: July 20, 2015
Author: Michael Schwartz

Grove Hill contends with Briar Hill, Wexford County HP, for the state prominence leader and Lower Peninsula highpoint titles.

I approached from the south and east. From the junction of MI-115 and 61, go NW on 115 for 5.7miles and turn left (west) onto 20 Mile Road. Go 4.7 miles and turn right (north) onto 130th. Avenue (Dighton Road). After 2.4 miles turn right into the somewhat obscure driveway signed for Grove Hill Park. I repeated Fred Lobdell's wanderings and agree with his conclusions that the main Grove Hill is higher than the areas to the north and across 130th. Avenue to the west. During my visit, this seemingly obscure hill had cars bearing license plates from Florida, Ohio, and New Jersey.

Briar Hill contends with Grove Hill, Osceola County HP, for the state prominence leader and Lower Peninsula highpoint titles.

I followed Fred Lobdell's report in large part, but stumbled onto what I think may be an easier approach with more driving on pavement.

>From the junction of MI-115 and 55, drive west on MI-55 for about 13 miles to a well-marked and signed (for Harrietta) turnoff onto paved South 13 Road. This changes direction a couple of times and becomes North 11 1/4 Road for a while before reverting to South 13 Road, but if you stay on the main road and avoid turning into the Caberfae resort (where the main road bears right), the road leads directly to the little town of Harrietta after 7-8 miles. In Harrietta, turn left onto W. Campbell St., then right onto S. 13 Road. Go about 1/2 mile north and turn right onto the signed W. 28 1/2 Road. Go east a little less than a mile and turn left onto S. 15 Road. Drive north about 1 1/4 miles to a T-intersection with Forest Service (FS) Road 5008. Turn right (east) onto FS 5008, go about 1/2 mile, and turn left (north) onto FS 5006 (not 5007 as cited by Fred). Drive mostly north on 5006, which had two quite muddy sections even during this dry summer but was passable by my sedan, for about a mile to the junction shown on the topo just south of Briar Hill. Park here and walk up the left road a few feet to where the old bermed road to the tower is visible. Hike this sometimes obscure road, making use of parallel ATV paths for about 1/2 mile to the summit.

Key coordinates (WGS-84 datum):

1. Turnoff from W 28 1/2 Rd. onto S. 15 Road: N44.31634 W85.68067
2. Terminus of S. 15 Rd at FS 5008: N44.34105 W85.68895
3. Turnoff from FS 5008 onto FS 5006: N44.34249 W85.67990
4. Road junction, parking, and trailhead just south of Briar Hill: N44.35950 W85.67736
5. Summit of Briar Hill: N44.36616 W85.67938

Bossier Parish (LA) Highpopint Trip Report

Two unnamed areas on Plain Dealing USGS quadrangle (470+ feet)

Date: July 29, 2015
Author: Michael Schwartz

I used aerial photos exclusively for this highpoint, as the topos are outdated and do not show all the dirt roads or the utility right-of-way.

I used Hans Haustein's driving approach, but observed mileages were different. Drive 1.8 miles west of Plain Dealing on AR-2 to a right turn onto Delaney Hill Road. Head north for 1.0 miles to the end of pavement, and continue another 0.4 miles to a right fork. Continue another mile to an intersection with Wallace Road, turn left and drive about 0.6 miles to the broad clearing for the utility line right-of-way. I chose to hike in via the r-o-w, since the road into the hunting camp was gated shut and posted. The r-o-w is posted, but no more adamantly than at a hundred other such-rights-of-way.

I parked along the gravel road at the right-of-way. hike west along the r-o-w for over 1/2 mile until the southerly of the two highpoint areas is reached at an obvious crest along the swath. From there I walked over to the woods road that goes north into the hunting camp, where I saw no one. Note on the aerial photo that the road heads NW through the camp and intersects another path heading SW. Take this path a short distance south to the northerly highpoint, which my GPS device placed almost directly on the road, and indeed the ground within a very few feet of the road seemed the highest around. Recent LIDAR analysis measured the northern area as being four feet higher than the southern area.

In cooler conditions I would have retraced my route, but since the temperature was pushing 100, I hiked back on the gated road from the hunting camp. This offered some shade and better footing than on the r-o-w. From the point where it intersects the main gravel road, my car was visible about 0.1 miles to the south.

Bossier Parish highpoint is the most prominent peak in Louisiana and is also on Andy Martin's Second Lap list.

Poteau Mtn on Cauthorn and Bates quadrangle sheets (2,660+ feet.)

Hans Haustein's directions will get you to the summit. For a western approach, see Edward Earl's trip report on Peakbagger.com. As noted by Edward, all the roads to the summit are now in good condition, apparently receiving regular maintenance, and are easily drivable by a sedan. Note also that the "open gate" mentioned by Hans is no longer there.

Also see Edward's analysis of where the two county highpoints are actually located. Close but not a true twofer.

Butler County (KS) Highpoint Trip Report

two areas (1,680+ feet)

Date: July 30, 2015
Author: Michael Schwartz

The highpoints are still on the ranch mentioned in Bill Jacobs' report from 2001, but the area is now also a wind farm. The wind farm roads allow driving directly to high ground, but permission should be obtained from the ranch owner, who is receptive to highpointers. The aerial photo is more useful than the outdated topo.

Butler County HP is the most isolated summit in Kansas.
