Every county in America, ranked by scenery and climate

So, I hesitate to post this, since it's only tangentially related to county high-pointing, but since articles with county-by-county themes seem to be of interest to many members, and it's not political, here goes . . .

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonkblog/wp/2015/08/17/every-county-in-america-ranked-by-natural-beauty/?wpmm=1&wpisrc=nl_p1most

I happen to live a few hundred yards from the number one county in the U.S.. My home county, Los Angeles, is still in the top 10 at number 7.

Wow...how interesting. I live in the 14th out of 3111 counties. One happy camper. Always have a room for highpointers at my place, near the highpoint.

My major disagreement is with the high ratings given to south Florida. Other than the beach, the rest of that area is naturally flat, scrubby, and ugly. As for the climate, it's great during the winter and disgusting the rest of the year. I won't mention the man-eating mosquitoes and giant cockroaches.

Agreed as well, especially re: Florida. The Pacific Northwest is terribly
underranked (WA, OR, & ID), solely because of winter sun it seems. IT'S
WINTER! ;)

Loving County TX ranks 273rd, or in the top 10%. If you've been there, you
would think it should rank #3,111. It's flat, scrubby, desolate, no one is
there. It looks like a Mad Max county.

Why would two adjacent counties rank so dramatically different? Apache AZ
is is 250th, Navajo AZ is 495th. They're not much different in general.
Look at where the darker blues abut a tan county. Crook WY is 365th, Weston
WY is 2065th...

My wife and I made two trips to southeast Minnesota this summer so she
could have a surgery performed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Those
counties ranked very low, some near the very bottom. If the algorithm
included corn availability in some way, they'd zoom to the top.

And I thought all the traffic on the Maine Turnpike was headed to Acadia, Baxter and the mid-coast region. How was I to know it was immigrants moving into Washington County, the most desirable place to live in Maine. I don't kow who the FDA hired to do this study but they should get thier money back. 120 in the shade, and there ain't no shade in SE Arizona. Yeah can't wait to get me there next August. And then there is the South Florida summer paradise -- give me some SNOW!!!

Re: Every county in America, ranked by scenery and climate

To be fair, if a place was to be marked down for cold winters there
should also have been a markdown for hot summers - that would eliminate
many desert counties

A related issue is do you choose an average for each county, use coolest
summer point and warmest winter point, or hottest summer point and
coldest winter point? Consider Inyo CA which could be at either the top
or the bottom of the list depending on which temps you use for Death
Valley and Mt Whitney - maybe there is an ideal midpoint somewhere. And
what is the ideal precipitation and is steady precip year round better or
worse than wet/dry seasons?
