Helmut Linzbichler, a 50-state completer, wrote the following,
"John, I just wanted to let you know that I completed the Utah County HPs

### Drat, I was hoping to be in the top 56 to do this.....

### John Mitchler & I have been meaning to create an article for the A2Z NL
for about 5 years now on this.... I have much of the work done, need to
sit down and finish it. I used the Completer and Finisher lists; color
coded them by state, found many any instances where persons finished
together, or missed by a day. The most famous incident by far was Ken
Jones and Dennis Whitehead meeting each other, without ever knowing
anything about each other, atop Wheeler Pk in NM in 1994, each finishing
his 50 state HPs that same instant. OK, Professor Surgent, what are the
odds of that !?!?!?!? Scott will say "slim, but indeed not remote, and
we should anticipate it occurring again, perhaps soon!"......

Trapper & Roxanne - keep kool ! We're all thinking of you up in Stehikin !

I would say the odds are much higher meeting on a western county than they are in a midwestern county. I almost met Gustav on the day he finished Wisconsin as I had plans to hike to Mount Whittlesey with my kids that day but our trip was canceled that weekend. That at least is still somewhat of a hike. I think time on the ground is also a factor in midwest rare meetings. A drive up on a a street corner or a 30 second point out in the edge of a field would be very rare to meet someone. But if I was doing a mega multi-contour that takes a whole afternoon or day, the odds would rise (and I would also find it a bit unnerviing that there would be another fellow in the fields I just entered or was about to enter).

The only chance meeting on my list with another full time COHP'er was this summer running into Charlie Winger on Mt Peale. I've had random meetings with other people who were peakbaggers on the trail, but not any other cohp'ers.

There was good info in the nine posts to the state line topic.

It was, however, TEDIOUS to read through them, because most included ALL of the previous posts to the topic.

Please, members, snip out unnecessary sections of previous posts, so we don't have to read, re read, rereread, and rerererereread them! Thank you.

Doug and Mike,

For Indiana, it looks to me like there might be a contender on the Wayne County line just south of the Randolph Co area. Take a look at the topo on Acme Mapper. On the state line under the "E" in Wayne, the "D" in Darke, then continuing east of "AR", then between the "RK", it appears to be another 1180 foot contour.

Indiana 40.02807 X 84.81020 1180+
Randolph County (Check along the state line north and
south of this point. I don't think there are any 1190
areas, but the terrain is confusing.

Well...the somewhat close encounter happened last year in Utah...on a sad note with Andrew Sharp. The effect was a heavy heart for sure.
Of course, Adam Jantz and I apparently finished Utah on the same day this last July.
Then there was meeting John Mitchler on Magazine Mountain in 1994 for the first time.
On the note of, "are you kidding me?": I was climbing Fremont Peak in Mariposa county (not a highpoint) and I decided to call my climbing buddy (also named Jim). I got a hold of him, only to find out, he was climbing a different Fremont Peak (Monterey county) at the same time. So we had a Jim on a Fremont Peak in two different places and those two Jims happened to be each other's climbing partner...all without any planning.
Scott, I use the birthday probability problem in classes every semester and I usually win a plate or two of cookies each time :).
I'm looking forward to running into each of you, on a highpoint, over the next 1,000 years ;)

Subject: [cohp] Two CoHPers Just Miss Each Other in Seward Co, Kansas.

On August 21, 2015, I visited the Seward Co, Kansas, high point. I followed the same way that is detailed in previous trip reports. As I drove west toward the high point, I noticed that the road had recently been bladed, but that somebody had driven down it even more recently. I parked near the oil well, and as I walked up the two-track to the high point, I saw very recent footprints in the sandy wheel ruts. For sure, they were made within the last day, and likely hadn't been there overnight. I thought that was odd, and that they must have been left by a fellow CoHPer. I tagged the hp, but couldn't find the register referenced in previous reports. Today, I checked peakbagger.com and indeed Richard Oestreicher also visited the Seward CoHP on August 21. A few years ago, there was a conversation on here about chance encounters. There was some discussion about the odds of two CoHPers meeting on the same high point. Anyway, I thought this was interesting enough to share with the group. Doug and Mike,

For
Indiana, it looks to me like there might be a contender on
the Wayne County line just south of the Randolph Co area.
Take a look at the topo on Acme Mapper. On the state line
under the "E" in Wayne, the "D" in
Darke, then continuing east of "AR", then between
the "RK", it appears to be another 1180 foot
contour.

Indiana 40.02807 X 84.81020 1180+

Randolph County (Check along the state line north and

south of this point. I don't think there are any
1190

areas, but the terrain is confusing.

AZ State line HP:

>>Arizona 36.32660 X 109.04574 9320'+ Apache County

Proud to claim an ascent (the first ??) of this liner
8-8-2014.

I'll pester Greg S. and John K. about how hard it
would be to add the state highliners as custom
lists to their sites.

That looks like it is a beautiful area. I am just not going to start another bucket list until I finish up something. I feel like one of the tow buzzards in the tree, "Don't Know about you but I am ready to kill something."

Question: Montezuma County CO
Wed Aug 26, 2015 7:27 pm (PDT) . Posted by:
"Beth Lakin" beth3up
I've been plugging away at the CO CoHP list this summer and am now sitting
at 23/64 counties.

I'm not sure when I'm going to make it down to Montezuma County
(potentially Sunday, potentially not until next year) but it appears that
trip reports on cohp.org have concluded that Lavender Peak is the high
point of the county while the "official"; list on Peakbagger.com still
awards that honor to Hesperus Peak.

I'm sure I'll eventually get both of them as I live in SW Colorado but I
don't think I'll have time to grab both of them this weekend and would
really like to add another to my total.

I guess my questions are 1) Is it the conclusion of the group that Lavender
is taller?

and

2) If the answer to question 1 is yes, what "proof"/info does Greg need to
change the list on peakbagger. ;-)

Signed, more than slightly Type A,

Beth

I seem to recall that the conclusion was nearly definitive that Lavender
was highest. However, I have not climbed it myself, but if I were a betting
man, I'd go with Lavender.
