Mauna Kea - "The Sacred Mountain"

I was doing some research for a list of the origin highpoint Indian names for a future Apex to Zenith Newsletter and came across this information on Wikipedia explaining why native Hawaiians consider the summit of Mauna Kea sacred.

The summits of the five volcanoes of Hawaii are revered as sacred mountains https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_mountains; and Mauna Kea's summit, the highest, is the most sacred.[34] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauna_Kea#cite_note-GrayHancock2007-34[35] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauna_Kea#cite_note-YamamotoTarbell2005-35 For this reason, a kapu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapu (ancient Hawaiian law) restricted visitor rights to high-ranking ali?i. Hawaiians associated elements of their natural environment with particular deities. In Hawaiian mythology https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian_mythology, the sky father https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_father W?kea https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C4%81kea marries the earth mother https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_mother Papa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papah%C4%81naumoku, giving birth to the Hawaiian Islands. In many of these genealogical myths, Mauna Kea is portrayed as the pair's first-born son. The summit of Mauna Kea was seen as the "region of the gods", a place where benevolent spirits reside. Poli?ahu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poliahu, deity of snow, also resides there.[31] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauna_Kea#cite_note-haw-culture-31 In Hawaiian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaiian_language, Mauna Kea means "white mountain",[36] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauna_Kea#cite_note-Pukui1986-36 a reference to its summit, which is usually snow-capped in winter. The mountain's name has been shortened from its original, traditional Hawaiian name: Mauna a W?kea ("Mountain of W?kea").Mauna Kea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauna_Kea#cite_note-Schmadel2012-37

Mauna Kea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauna_Kea#cite_note-Schmadel2012-37 Mauna Kea (English pronunciation: /?m??n? ?ke?.?/ or /?ma?n? ?ke?.?/, Hawaiian: [?m?un? ?k?j?]), also called Mauna a W?kea in Hawaiian cul...

5th attempt on Allegany co MD

An account of my (4th and) 5th attempts on the HP of Allegany co MD.
For background,
First attempt was at the MD convention, 2001, a group ascent of Dans Rock
Second attempt was 2013, to get Big Savage Mtn. at the PA state-line. I wasn't sure I got it.
Third attempt was 2014, to get Big Savage Mtn at the PA state-line, found the county corner
-- In Dec. 2014 we discovered that the county line had shifted and Sampson Rock was higher.
Fourth attempt was 9-6-2015. My car broke down within Metro-Washington DC.
Fifth attempt was 9-12-2015. My car acted up again. I unwisely pushed it all the way to Cumberland. It is still there.

I hired a taxi to go up to Sampson Rock Allegany MD coHP. I got
close but didn't find it to be confident about it. The taxi-driver was
only willing to wait 40 minutes. I hustled. I waved to the guy who
owns the house on the left at the gate. He waved back, said "OK"
to me going up. Just past the turn there was a open 'route', as for
a power-line, going up to the ridge. I checked a bit further, saw the
ground tending to slope down, then started bushwhacking. I start-
ed up my GPS, but fouled it somehow so that I didn't get any
function out of it, and I didn't have time or patience to try to get it
to work. I went up to the highest point on the pipeline 'route',
which seemed highest in the area. I didn't spot a BM. I had
noticed some large rocks to the southwest, whose base was
definitely lower than the base of the highest under the 'route'.
The looks-highest of the large rocks would have been a chal-
lenge to ascend, but it did not look like the photo of Sampson
Rock that someone had put up a few weeks ago.
Because of trees there is no visibility back and forth. My guess
is that the highest of the large rocks is no more than 3 ft. higher
in altitude than the highest under the 'route'. In a hurry, I did not
attempt to go up the looks-highest of the large rocks.
I hustled back to the taxi and he said I took 35-37 minutes.

How does this compare with others' experience at Sampson Rock?
