Thanks, Doug72901, for the information.

I compared your photographs with what I remember, and the Sampson Rock lat.-long. coordinates you provided with mapper.acme.com. There are two 'Horizontal Control Marks' on top of Sampson Rock. You provided that coordinates of the northeast HCS mark, = (39.70840, -78.92863). Is this in a linear 'east-west' clearing, like done for power lines?

The southwest HCS mark is higher, with a very small 2940' closed contour. It is at (39.70800 -78.92914), about 200 ft. southwest of the northeast mark.

Could be that you've got to go back and redo Sampson Rock too.

My work was based on LiDAR and not on USGS maps. I was standing on the BM when I took the photos for the panorama. If you look closely you can see one of the RM's to the far left in the photo. The BM is lower than the rock directly to the right of center in the panorama.

Has anyone brought their dog with them on County Highpoint trips to keep them company in these often lonely endeavours?

I've completed 26 of Colorado's 64 highpoints and the only ones my pup
hasn't joined me on were Wilson Peak, Mt. Wilson, and Mt. Sneffels. Knowing
what I know now, I'd take him up Sneffels as well since he does just fine
with low class 3 stuff. I expect that of my remaining CoHPs in the state
he'll make it to all of them except Blanca, the Crestone points, Windom,
Longs, and Hesperus. (I'd say that a 54/64 finish for a pup in Colorado is
no slouch.)

Leon Peak was really dog unfriendly (big boulders) and I wouldn't take him
up there again but he totally toughed it out.

The pup is an ideal County Highpoint companion since he loves random car
rides and never judges me for just wandering all over the place. :-)

Apparently I have 8 rez HPs done. I was unaware of this until I clicked to
view the front-runners list.

I have hiked a few other peaks on the Navajo Nation and the Tohono O'odham
Nation. The Navajo Nation generally allows recreational access onto their
lands. The TON not so much. Most other reservations in AZ don't allow
public access, or don't have anything of interest to climb.

The Case to Rename Mt Rainier
Tue Sep 15, 2015 8:43 pm (PDT) . Posted by:

In the wake of the Denali controversy. There is an effort underway to change Mt Rainier to its Native American name Tahoma. Tahoma means "that frozen water " or T'Swaq - "the sky wiper". There may be good cause to do this.

Did you know Mt Rainier is named after the rather portly Admiral Rainier.?During the American Revolution Rainier captured a large American privateer ship and was severely wounded. So we have the highest mountain in Washington named after an individual who fought against the Americans during the Revolution! How the heck did that happen.

It doesn't stop there. The neighboring highpoint to the south; Mt Hood, OR was named after the British Admiral Samuel Hood who never even saw Mt Hood!
Weird things happening.

T-Swaq 14,411 ft - the sky wiper, it touches the sky - or Tahoma is "that frozen water http://www.thinkbabynames.com/names/1/water". From the Puyallup Tribe http://www.thinkbabynames.com/names/1/tribe.

Mount Rainier was once known by its many native names. Now, an alliance of tribal members is moving forward with a proposal to restore an original name to this Northwest landmark. But a long bureaucratic process lies ahead. British explorers named Mount Rainier for a Navy captain who fought to put down the American Revolution. During the American Revolutionary War, Rainier was severely wounded on 8 July 1778, while capturing a large American privateer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privateer. He was promoted in rank and went on to become Captain of the 32-gun frigate HMS Astraea https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Astraea_%281781%29. He commanded her on the Jamaica Station from 1786 to 1790.

In 1790, he became the commander of HMS Monarch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Monarch_%281765%29. On 8 May 1792, George Vancouver https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Vancouver named Mount Rainier https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Rainier in modern-day Washington https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_%28U.S._state%29 after Captain Rainier:

"The weather was serene and pleasant, and the country continued to exhibit between us and the eastern snowy range the same luxuriant appearance. At is northern extremity, Mount Baker bore by compass N. 22E.; the round snowy mountain, now forming its southern extremity, and which, after my friend, Rear Admiral Rainier, I distinguish by the name of Mount Rainier, bore https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Rainier,_junior https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Rainier,_junior

Pike & Lackawanna County COHPS

Attempted Pike and Lackawanna County highpoints on a sunny hot Labor Day morning. Both county highpoints are located in the Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania. Both attempts were unsuccessful.

Pike County has twin County highpoints on heavily wooded hills near Lake Jamie and Lake Russell. Both locations are heavily posted. I drove Misery Road, which leads south from Lake Ruseel Road and past several houses. I saw a man walking and asked if he knew who owned the property by the highpoint but he did not. I turned around and driving north past the highpoint near Lake Jamie and then the northeasterly highpoint near Lake Russell the posted signs said the property was owned by the Yarmoush family.

I did a search of Yarmoush on my smart phone and found someone named Yarmoush located in Canandensis, PA a small town nearby. I was unable to locate the phone number so I did not pursue further.

I then drove to the Lackawaana County highpoint about a 40 minute drive to the northwest. The Lackawanna County highpoint is located on Moosic Mountain on Pennsylvania State Gameland property, so access was not an issue other than the gate was closed.

All prior trip descriptions are valid. I parked in the State game preserve lot and walked the dirt road passing under the power lines and following the road uphill to the right. Afterr perhaps 10 minutes after the powerlines there is a mowed grassy path leading in a northeasterly direction still going gradually uphill. I followed this path for approximately five minutes to its end. I saw higher ground off to the left. The problem here is the vegetation around the highpoint is nearly impenetrable. wasnt about to get my arms and faced scratched up. I was also concerned about snakes which Pennsylvania has its share. I did find an area open enough to enter the woods but I quickly came to that area of impenetrable vegetation. After 10 minutes or so I decided to turn back.

Two unsuccessful attempts; heavily posted in Pike County and heavily vegetated in Lackawanna County.
