As a historian, and even one who had native american studies as a focus when earning my degree, I find these types of pushes sketchy at best. Rainier for example had gone by many names by many different tribes, and the length of time that those names were even in use is not calculable given a lack of primary sources to measure their use. Add to this, that the post-columbian plagues wiped out a majority of the native americans in north america and there is a strong chance that names like Tahoma were new ones that came about through tribal reformations and language blends in the post plague shakeups. The point being that the argument that these names were around for millennia before Europeans showed up is just a guess given the lack of primary sources to back it up and a push to rename an assortment of established mountains is just politically correct bs.

Mountain talk aside, if people really want to be proactive about reparations towards injustices done to native tribes let's not be piddling around with names of mountains and reverse the Dawes Act for a start and give them their damn land back.

Aside from which, most people outside of the Seattle area will wonder why we’re renaming a mountain after a font.
