Regreening Oklahoma

Recently back home from a 3 week peakbagging trip (much of it with Art Tauchen) to
TX, OK, AR, NM and CO, in that order.
Did 30 summits + 2 non-summits. It was a miscellaneous bag. Finished the 1k's of AR
(I had 5 left to do). Also did 6 new COHP's in AR (Pulaski, Jackson, Stone, Baxter, Benton, Crawford).
Did 6 new degree grid summits (see LoJ custom lists). Finished the trip off with three 13ers in CO
with son Erik.

But the motivator for the trip was the regreening of OK. I had been claiming the COHP completions
of 29 states until a while back someone found a higher point in Atoka County, OK and a higher point
for Alleghany County, MD showed up when the county line with Garrett County was moved.

One can get to the logical starting point for the climb to the Atoka COHP by driving west from Exit 38
on the Indian Nation Turnpike between McAlester and Antlers about a mile on OK 43, then driving
north on N4070 RD (Pittsburg Rd) about 3 miles, then east and north and east under the turnpike on Guy Jr Rd about a mile, then about 4 miles east on E1680 RD (Burris Valley Rd). Art and I
checked this out on Sept 16. We thought we might camp somewhere out Burris Valley Rd.

Everything out there, though, is private property and posted. A passerby stopped and informed
us of that. So, we ended up camping (with permission) at the Daisy Store on OK 43 half mile east
of the turnpike. Next day, leaving my camper at Daisy, Art drove me back out the Burris Valley Rd.
I hopped a locked posted gate (elevation 830 feet) and disappeared into the woods while Art drove back to Daisy. The Atoka COHP (1350, P=0) is a liner at the point where the east-west Atoka/Pittsburg County Line crosses a north-south ridge leading to a 1395 point in Pittsburg County. I reached the ridge 3/10 mile below the county line and hiked the bouldery brushy ridge until 1/10 mile above the county line. At the point where the county line (and thus the Atoka COHP) should be I found strands of barbed wire stretched east-west on the ground across the ridge. Some one at some point trying to mark the county line? On the way back down the ridge I touched every boulder and outcrop that might be considered the Atoka COHP. Then I called Art with estimated time of arrival at the road. I got down, he picked me up and off we went. 2.5 hours, 2 miles, 550 feet elevation gain.

So, I now have 28 green states. Maryland, here I come, next summer, I think.
I now have 1737 COHP's. And, oh yes, 514 Colorado 13ers.

I never met Gary either but enjoyed his writings. There's a nice and fairly
long obituary of Gary in the California Native Plant Society San Diego
Chapter newsletter (pages 5-6)

Well worth reading. (I wonder what relation Tyler Suttle is to him.) Thanks, David. Gary (through his book) pretty much single-handedly introduced me to this infernal hobby.
