Is there a consensus out there when it comes to the best way to visit the Cape Cod CoHPs?

I'll be there in a couple of weeks and was interested in people's recent views on the two island CoHPs = Marthas Vineyard High Point + Sankaty Head.

Thanks!

As per previous reports, I contacted Sgt. Charles LaFlame at charles.e.laflame.mil@mail.mil<mailto:charles.e.laflame.mil@mail.mil> back in May for a potential visit in June. He was very nice, but unfortunately, the dates I was in the area didnt work. Here is the text of his message:

The 90 day window is no longer an issue, but the June timing is. This is a period of intense activity along the road from the gate to Pine Hill, and we do not want to mix untrained personnel with road marches, convoys, simulated IED blasts, blanks fired by machine guns, or other potential hazards. In the future, we only need a few days to make sure the area is safe, and process the paperwork (see attached). Hopefully next time you are in the area there will be less extensive training.

Good luck!

Coby

Hi Jobe,
I did both of them during December of 2012. I just took a ferry (the fastest one) to Nantucket and had a rental company pick me up at the pier. Then off to the highpoint, which is right near a parking lot. I then drove my rental to other high spots on the island.
The next day or so, I went to Martha's Vineyard and took my car with me on the ferry. I did the highpoints and some other hills. I also took a ferry to Chappaquiddick Island.
It was a great adventure, maybe a little pricey though. I always wanted to visit Nantucket because of the show Wings. And Martha's Vineyard because of all the publicity it receives.
Have fun,
Jim

Beckie & I drove to East Central Nevada over the weekend, hoping for at
least Ruby Dome, and the Himalayan Snowcock. We were unable to spot the
elusive bird, spending two days at high altitude in the Ruby Mtns, but we
were able to climb Ruby Dome and Diamond Peak down by Eureka.

Incredible weather there, and aspens still yellow. Great time. Ate at the
Basque restaurant Star in Elko, amazing lamb chops. Drove a new highway
down to Eureka. Survived a blown out tire on I-70, thanx to a great guy at
Discount Tire in Glenwood Springs CO.

TR's to follow:

Beckie & Dave Covill

With Beckie, camped at TH via Spring Creek Association gate key. Minimal
hassle to do that, well worth it. 2:50 up to lake, 2:10 to summit via E
ridge. 1:20 down to lake, 1:30 to TH. Long day, lots of boulder hopping in
upper basin, then steep narrow ridge, exhilarating, flat rocks but 4-8'
wide upper portion of it. Came down NW to minor saddle, then down ledges
in a northeast direction scrambling to 10,400' knob area. Pick your
poison, I liked my up route and then down route. Up ledges would be ugly,
down ridge would be interesting to say the least. Cairns everywhere,
Nevadans love their cairns.... Brand new Otter Box with summit register
just placed a week prior.

Almost no one in entire valley, on Columbus Day weekend. Griswold Lake is
beautiful, would backpack to it if we ever came back. Did NOT see the
Himalayan Snowcock. Great weather, nice views all directions. Aspen still
yellow in valley.

Beckie & Dave Covill

Drove to Poison Spring gate, then on to Stock Tank and parked. Did NOT
attempt to drive up steep portion to saddle; in retrospect I could have
done this. It was dark when we arrived, had it been light out we would
have followed the Mike Coltrin route up to Alpha Peak and traverse over
(looked reasonable), or tried to drive up this. Rocky at bottom, easier
higher (just dirt) but steeper. BTW, my mileages were off by 2-3 tenths
versus Ken Jones' report. I had: leave the hwy at 0.0; Landfill turn to R
at 1.3; Landfill itself at 1.7; Baumann Ranch to R at 4.4; Newark Summit
junction and turn to L at 8.6; Poison Spring gate at 9.4; Stock Tank at
10.6. Just keep going, directions are fine. Road is nice to turn by Newark
Summit, decent ( 3 out of 10 ) to Poison Spring barbed wire gate, rutted
with a few rocks but still not bad to Stock Tank ( 5 out of 10 ). I did
view the 2nd gate, it is orange, laying on the ground by the side of the
road, about 0.1 miles BELOW the main Poison Spring gate, and appears by the
grass growing up through it to be no longer in use.

I humped it up to the saddle at road's end in 14 minutes, would have taken
at least 3 to drive up it slowly. Made it to summit in 2:13 from Stock
Tank, back down in 1:20. I was flying... Trail comes and goes, stay high
when possible on ridge. Final push I contoured right and then steeply up
from the E rib saddle, then down the S slope. I would just stick to S
slope if I went back again ever. Nice day, great weather, no one on mtn at
all. Ammo can register with plenty of paper, usual cast of characters had
signed in during past several years, including a week prior.
******************

I am now at 11 of 17 in NV. It will be interesting to see how this plays
out; in the next few years I could in theory finish WY, UT, NV, and CA. No
idea when I can do some more damage west of me.

Beckie is down to a handful of cohps in NM, and we plan to meet Ken & Karen
Jones there in a few weeks to co-climb some cohps the ladies lack.

**********************

Ticks - I pulled one off of the back of my L knee in May, probably got him
in NH during the Beckie-Blitz. Actually was a bit sore for a few days. Went
to ER, got a pill. I grew up near New Bedford MA, near Cape Cod Canal.
Several older people in my neighborhood got Lyme disease, more than one
died of it. My nephew, then about 13, got it, and was laid low for 2
years+, bad issues with his joints hurting him. Ticks are not to be taken
lightly!

I got about 15 on me once in MO, on a sprint up Washington cohp Pruitt Mtn
next to Taum Sauk. No issues, but I was amazed at how many clung to me in
less than an hour, and most of the time it was on a trail, with only minor
grass walking. Rarely see them in CO, perhaps I hang out too high for them?

http://www.cohp.org/mo/Washington_1.html

*******************

I received my HP Club Newsletter yesterday. It had been a bit delayed in
the USPS system, don't blame Editor John.... Great IA-15 Kornvention
writeup on cohp activity by Roy Wallen, nice photo.

*******************

What cohps in MT or WY will be targeted during the convention in August ?

D ( Voting for the next convention will be for South Region up in MT in
August, start thinking about it..... ) C
