MEDINA COUNTY, OH NOW PROBLEMATIC

Has any prior visitor to Medina County, OH actually seen BM Wyman or the 2 reference markers? According to the NGS BM notes, the station was last recovered in 2008, before the Andy Hatzos visit in 2009. This county has become problematic. Ownership of the property at 1660 King Road has changed. The driveway up to the house is now blocked by a sturdy metal gate near King Road.

When I attempted to visit this contour this past Friday the 13th, I followed the 2009 analysis prepared by Hatzos. First, I drove up the driveway to 1604 King Road. I parked near the house and walked to the front door to obtain permission to wander the property. (I agree the highest ground appeared to be near that door.) A middle-aged woman came out the side door and asked if she could help. Soon we were met by her father, the homeowner, Mr. Gibson. They invited me inside the house to discuss my pursuit on this windy, chilly day.

Mr. Gibson has lived there for over 50 years, and he acknowledged receiving several HP visitors over the years. He reported personally seeing BM Wyman sometime in the past. He knew his house was a HP candidate. He also thought the BM area was a good candidate as well. He gave me the name of the neighbor at 1634 King (which I quickly forgot), and he suggested I stop there to ask more questions.

I drove up the driveway to 1634 and was met by a boy playing outside. We went to the front door where we met his mom. I told her Mr. Gibson had suggested I stop to speak with her, but she was only able to offer limited help. She permitted me to wander the property line between her house and the property just south, but she was (rightfully) unable to grant me access to the neighboring property.

This homeowner and Mr. Gibson both mentioned that the ownership of 1660 King Road had changed hands in the last 2-3 years. The lady who formerly resided there had died. Recent changes to the property included large, newly-constructed garage that was built on the property in the woods shown in the Hatzos photograph (described by Andy as 50 feet due south of 1634). Thus, the garage appears to now sit right atop the 2nd HP candidate. I thanked the lady for her time, and I mentioned that I was going to drive next door to try to speak with the neighbor.

Returning to King Road, I saw that the gate was closed, blocking access to the house. I parked in front of the gate in the driveway, looking to see if a speaker box to the house was present. I noted a NO TRESPASSING sign on the other side of the gate. I did not find any intercom box, so I remained a while longer, pondering my next move and making some notes.

While I sat outside the gate, I saw some headlights turn on from a vehicle up by the house. Realizing that someone was coming, I backed away from the gate and waited in the road, hoping I could get a chance to speak with the driver. A black truck pulled up beside me, the window rolled down, and the words were immediate expletives.

My recall is not perfect, but the words went something like Youre trespassing, and the cops have been called and are coming. You dont drive up the neighbors driveway, and you dont park in front of my gate. The words were incessantly hostile, and his view was clearly known. There was no discussion. I told him I meant no harm, and I drove away.

I drove several miles before stopping to complete my notes. I passed a police car along the way, and I wondered if he was coming for me. I also wondered about the mans curious comment about not driving up the neighbors driveway, since he clearly had no jurisdiction over their property. It was now dark, and my HP day was over. I drove to find a motel, humming the Meatloaf melody to Two Out of Three Aint Bad., having summited nearby Ashland and Holmes Counties earlier in the day.
