MikeW,

Living in the E and hiking in the W I would say the greatest differences are altitude and boulder-hopping. There is not much you can do about altitude training in NJ, but I would suggest that training for the crux of the climb by boulder-hopping some of the tough trails in NH or Adk might be useful. And certainly you should practice snow climbing in advance if you are serious about Gannett.

Congratulations to Doug Melton on his completion of the county HPs of New Jersey. Doug finished the Garden State on Bald Mountain in Bergen County on Dec. 10, 2015. He is the 19th person to complete New Jersey.

I echo those sentiments. Unfortunately, I was unable to meet up with Doug so we could celebrate his completion together.

(Doug Melton's recent post to Lidarhighpointers@yahoogroups.com)

>>During a trip to the Northeast last week I had an opportunity to
complete this county. While it is a single point county, I found that
the original point listed in all peakbagging sites has been destroyed by
the construction of a lease road to a Seneca Resources well pad.

>> The original point was located at approximately 41.5983/-78.3614.
The construction of the north to south lease road has heavily modified
the site. I processed the LiDAR and picked a high point of 2372.1' at
41.598346/-78.360994 (pre-construction). The highest remaining point is
now on the west side of the roadcut at 41.59822/-78.36128 with an
elevation of 2370.2'

>> While it appears that the access along Cooks Run Road was once open
to the public, it is now posted and guarded by multiple guard shacks
(occupied 24/7). I used my oil field credentials to gain access, but do
not know if anyone else would be successful. There is major pipeline
construction in addition to the construction of well pads and drilling
operations [...]
