Just from looking at maps, let me suggest another possible good hike in IA ...

IA: Decatur, located in Sand Creek State Wildlife Area.

On the google map it doesn't show the high point being in the Sand Creek Wildlife Area, but the whole access road to it is open to the public from what the signs were showing me. Went into a field when trouncing around a little bit because the top contour is somewhat wide and leads to a bit of wandering around on top (a lot of wandering if you're into Lobdellizing). The two track access road is gated against anyone driving in though so it is definitely a hike.

OFFTOPIC - Low Points

Just slightly off-topic: for those of you who also like to chase low points, is there a definitive listing of county, state, country, world low points anywhere to be found? As an example, has anyone determined the exact geographic low point ont he shore of the Dead Sea?

Thanks.

I developed a list of the lowpoints for Arizona's 15 counties for my book,
Andy vetted the list for accuracy. All lie along rivers where it exits a
county. To date, I have visited zero of them. They look horrible, with
dense brush, and the uncertainty of where the county line is located.
Coconino County's lowpoint is along the Colorado River within the Grand
Canyon, so I suppose that one is not horrible.

I recall seeing a book for Utah's county lowpoints. I do not recall the
author. Some of those look like fun challenges. I have one to my credit: I
visited the Beaver Dam Wash bed in 2013, hiked to the stateline fence
between AZ/UT and stepped all around the area. This would be Utah's lowest
point overall. But finding a distinct lowest point was hard to do. The
washbed is very wide here.

Just a handful of states have lowpoints below sea level: CA, LA, and TX
(Texas' being where the Rio Grande changed direction, leaving behind
depressions that eventually dried out, not far from where it drains into
the Gulf). The rest would be either along the coast, or if land-locked,
likely along a river boundary where it exits the state.

The lowpoint along a shoreline would be the shoreline itself: the elevation
can't vary since the water is presumably at level at all times, the waves
and swells nonwithstanding (and ignoring tides).

The issue here is that the elevation can vary depending on water levels, which can change dramatically on rivers and reservoirs and apparently even on oceans. And people like AH insisted on visiting all candidates which means all the bumps for highpoints and presumably walking the entire shoreline for lake and ocean lowpoints - then going back if the water level changes.

Maybe why there is little serious interest in lowpoints.

Norway to give Finland a better high point ?
Fri Dec 18, 2015 11:48 pm (PST) . Posted by:
"Andy Martin" oldadit
According to the following news some Norwegians are
trying to give Finland 4 acres of Norwegian soil
in order to improve the height and quality
of the Finnish high point:

http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/18/europe/norway-mountain-gift-finland/

Maybe this could get the ball moving on some worthwhile AZ
COHP improvements ?

1. Pima county could give Pinal a few acres including
Rice Peak, and eliminate the nasty COHP liner:

http://listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=32.5133&lon=-110.7496&z=16&t=u&d=y

2. Gila county could define the Mogollon rim as not
exceeding 7900' here:
http://listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=34.3463&lon=-111.0480&z=16&t=u&d=y
and here:
http://listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=34.3781&lon=-111.1495&z=16&t=u&d=y

This would give up virtually nothing of importance, and
gain Gila mighty Mazatzal Peak (7903') for a COHP:

http://listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=34.0626&lon=-111.4610&z=16&t=u&d=y

More details on the Norway & Finland land deal:

https://www.facebook.com/Haltijubileum/
Here's haltitoppen like jubileumsgave in pitch.
Finland celebrates 100th Anniversary 6. December 2017. in the occasion
can Norway give a gift no one can match. Finland's highest point lies
today in a slope on haltifjellet (1324 MOH).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halti
Bjrn Geirr Harsson, a lifelong veteran of the government's cadastre
authority, realized then, that finnenes highest point is on a
mountainside, but that the very top (1331 MOH) just lies a few hundred
feet within Norway's boundaries. With it he came on a fun and friendly
idea. If we in 2017 remove myself a little piece of country will our
neighbors get a brand-new apogee in jubileumsgave!
It is of course a few challenges in laws and rules, arealbestemmelser
and practical implementation, but there it's will is that way. With this
side wish we who likes the idea to see interest among norwegians. If
enough people like and share and then it would show newspapers,
political parties and the government that it is a strong desire to give
Finland their biggest event in 100 years!
Let us take Finland to new heights!

This is a good idea. Some good ideas come to mind.

For example, the highest point of Connecticut is on the MA-CT border, on
the south slope of Mount Frissell (2,455 ft.), which is actually in
Massachusetts. CT and MA should execute a land swap, moving a small section
of land around the summit of Mount Frissell from Massachusetts to
Connecticut in exchange for a similar section from Connecticut to
Massachusetts. Here is where the land swap could take place:

http://listsofjohn.com/qmap?lat=42.0513&lon=-73.4821&z=15

Perhaps the trade could involve sending Bear Mountain
<http://listsofjohn.com/qmap?lat=42.0449&lon=-73.4550&z=15> (2,327 ft.),
with its lookout and popular location along the Appalachian Trail, from CT
to MA in exchange for the mighty Mount Frissell massif.
