COHPers -

Please provide feedback by December 31st.

Nutshell - the SC Dept Nat Resources, which owns the summit of Sassafras
Mtn the SC HP, has grandiose plans for a summit observation tower/platform,
an improved parking area beneath it, a lookout view to the NW off of the
parking lot, a restroom facility there, and perhaps more. They possess
$500K, they need $1,5MM to do it all. They plan to proceed with the
platform up top in 2016. The HPF is attempting to seek Grants to help fund
progress.

I personally was a bit aghast to see the trees all cut down when visiting
during the TN-14 Konvention. It isn't the same place you all have visited
in the past (unless you have been post ~June 2014). It is what it is....
They wanted to put up a tower, but it would have had to be ADA compliant,
and it would have cost >$1MM alone to put in an elevator, or a long winding
ramp outside of it a la Clingmans Dome. Wasn't going to happen. Hence,
the plan to make a modest 5-10' high platform, with a modest ramp to get to
the top of it. That's the plan for now.

*****************************

Of immediate importance, they are doing a Brick Paver Program to raise
funds. I am very familiar with these, Colo Mtn Club did it , The Colorado
Rockies even did it at Coors Field. I participated at both.

Their cutoff date is about Jan 3rd, and is a very firm date per Mark Hall
my SC DNR contact guy.

We could create a memorial to Edward Earl, who grew up in SC, and has deep
roots there. We could go in for a Small, Medium, or Large Brick. The
associated costs are $100, $500, $1,000.

We can do it via the HP Foundation, or outside of it. It needn't state on
the brick that it was from the HPF, just from "Friends of Edward Earl", and
could have several lines of text remembering Edward. The advantage would be
that all donations would be tax-deductible.

A Small or Medium Brick would blend in with hundreds of others; a Large
Brick would stand out prominently. I asked Mark Hall about how many of
each had been "spoken for". He said "roughly a few hundred Small and
Medium, fewer Large..."

Please provide feedback on this. YES, NO, or MAYBE.... I hope to hear
from as many people as possible in the coming two weeks.

http://www.dnr.sc.gov/sassafrasmountain.html

Small 4x8" brick = $100 = 32 Sq inches = $3.13 / Sq Inch & 3 lines

Medium 8x8" brick = $500 = 64 Sq inches = $7.81 / Sq Inch & more
lines (6) & letters

Large 16x16" stone = $1,000 = 256 Sq inches = $3.91 / Sq Inch & more lines
(6) & letters

I have pasted below the News Release

Thanx for considering participating. I would imagine that if we got enough
folks pledging, we could proceed with whatever size paver that was
indicated by the turnout. Any funds donated in excess of what was needed
would stay in HPF accounts until a future SC HP project could be commenced
that would be of significant scope, and could also be "In Memory of Edward
Earl". Think big is the motto....

Please do NOT do a simple REPLY to this, as it will duplicate the whole
News Release etc. Please post a simple message to COHP Yahoo groups
without the whole thread, which will keep responses short and concise and
easy to read.

NEWS RELEASE #15 December 14, 2015
DNR News (864) 380-5201

Jan. 1 will be last chance to take part in Sassafras Mountain brick paver
program

The Sassafras Mountain brick paver donation program, which has raised about
$60,000 for the viewing platform on South Carolina's highest point, will
officially draw to a close on Jan. 1, 2016.
"The brick paver program has been a great one," said Mark Hall, Jocassee
Gorges project leader for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR),
"but we're getting close to breaking ground on the viewing platform, so
it's time to wind it up. In the spirit of the season, these Sassafras
bricks would make a very meaningful Christmas present." Bricks may be
designated in honor or memory of a child, friend, or loved one. This is a
unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for special recognition on the
highest point in South Carolina.
For more information on purchasing a brick paver on Sassafras
Mountain, visit www.dnr.sc.gov/sassafrasmountain.html.
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has gathered a
total of about $500,000 in private donations to construct a viewing
platform with an unparalleled view of the Blue Ridge Mountains of South
Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. Plans to improve Sassafras Mountain
have been in the works for more than two years and the project is closer to
fruition.
Architects and engineers have completed preliminary plans for the
observation structure that will be built to straddle the peak at 3,553 feet
above sea level. Gil L. Stewart Architects LLC of Pickens was chosen to
finalize the design and is working on detailed construction documents.
The comprehensive project involves an observation platform at the
peak, restrooms, improvements to the parking area, a picnic facility,
accessory trails, informational kiosks and educational pavilions.
"Presently we have enough money to get the observation platform
and restrooms designed and built, said Hall. Once that initial phase is
implemented, we will continue with the other plans for trails, parking, and
pavilions as we secure additional funds. He estimates breaking ground in
early 2016.
Duke Energy, The Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund, The Felburn
Foundation and anonymous donors have contributed toward the project. DNR is
still seeking major donations to complete the comprehensive improvements on
Sassafras Mountain that will be open to the public and provide a special
educational opportunity for school children of all ages.
In addition to being the highest point in South Carolina at 3,553 feet,
Sassafras Mountain sits on the state line with North Carolina, is along the
Continental Divide, and is one of the important features of the Foothills
Trail (www.foothillstrail.org), a 77-mile footpath between Table Rock and
Oconee state parks.

I want to contribute. Is there a link to the HPF to which we can submit a
donation?

"Presently we have enough money to get the observation platform and restrooms designed and built, said Hall. Once that initial phase is implemented, we will continue with the other plans for trails, parking, and pavilions as we secure additional funds. He estimates breaking ground in early 2016. Duke Energy, The Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund, The Felburn Foundation and anonymous donors have contributed toward the project. DNR is still seeking major donations to complete the comprehensive improvements on Sassafras Mountain that will be open to the public and provide a special educational opportunity for school children of all ages.In addition to being the highest point in South Carolina at 3,553 feet, Sassafras Mountain sits on the state line with North Carolina, is along the Continental Divide, and is one of the important features of the Foothills Trail (www.foothillstrail.org), a 77-mile footpath between Table Rock and Oconee state parks.

Subject: [cohp] Edward Earl - possibility for a modest memorial - Sassafras Mtn brick paver program

COHPers -
Please provide feedback by December 31st.
Nutshell - the SC Dept Nat Resources, which owns the summit of Sassafras Mtn the SC HP, has grandiose plans for a summit observation tower/platform, an improved parking area beneath it, a lookout view to the NW off of the parking lot, a restroom facility there, and perhaps more. They possess $500K, they need $1,5MM to do it all. They plan to proceed with the platform up top in 2016. The HPF is attempting to seek Grants to help fund progress.
I personally was a bit aghast to see the trees all cut down when visiting during the TN-14 Konvention. It isn't the same place you all have visited in the past (unless you have been post ~June 2014). It is what it is.... They wanted to put up a tower, but it would have had to be ADA compliant, and it would have cost >$1MM alone to put in an elevator, or a long winding ramp outside of it a la Clingmans Dome. Wasn't going to happen. Hence, the plan to make a modest 5-10' high platform, with a modest ramp to get to the top of it. That's the plan for now.
*****************************
Of immediate importance, they are doing a Brick Paver Program to raise funds. I am very familiar with these, Colo Mtn Club did it , The Colorado Rockies even did it at Coors Field. I participated at both.
Their cutoff date is about Jan 3rd, and is a very firm date per Mark Hall my SC DNR contact guy.
We could create a memorial to Edward Earl, who grew up in SC, and has deep roots there. We could go in for a Small, Medium, or Large Brick. The associated costs are $100, $500, $1,000.
We can do it via the HP Foundation, or outside of it. It needn't state on the brick that it was from the HPF, just from "Friends of Edward Earl", and could have several lines of text remembering Edward. The advantage would be that all donations would be tax-deductible.
A Small or Medium Brick would blend in with hundreds of others; a Large Brick would stand out prominently. I asked Mark Hall about how many of each had been "spoken for". He said "roughly a few hundred Small and Medium, fewer Large..."
Please provide feedback on this. YES, NO, or MAYBE.... I hope to hear from as many people as possible in the coming two weeks.

Small 4x8" brick = $100 = 32 Sq inches = $3.13 / Sq Inch & 3 lines
Medium 8x8" brick = $500 = 64 Sq inches = $7.81 / Sq Inch & more lines (6) & letters
Large 16x16" stone = $1,000 = 256 Sq inches = $3.91 / Sq Inch & more lines (6) & letters
I have pasted below the News Release
Thanx for considering participating. I would imagine that if we got enough folks pledging, we could proceed with whatever size paver that was indicated by the turnout. Any funds donated in excess of what was needed would stay in HPF accounts until a future SC HP project could be commenced that would be of significant scope, and could also be "In Memory of Edward Earl". Think big is the motto....
Please do NOT do a simple REPLY to this, as it will duplicate the whole News Release etc. Please post a simple message to COHP Yahoo groups without the whole thread, which will keep responses short and concise and easy to read.
Dave ( we miss you Edward ! ) Covill

NEWS RELEASE #15 December 14, 2015 DNR News (864) 380-5201 Jan. 1 will be last chance to take part in Sassafras Mountain brick paver program The Sassafras Mountain brick paver donation program, which has raised about $60,000 for the viewing platform on South Carolina's highest point, will officially draw to a close on Jan. 1, 2016."The brick paver program has been a great one," said Mark Hall, Jocassee Gorges project leader for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR), "but we're getting close to breaking ground on the viewing platform, so it's time to wind it up. In the spirit of the season, these Sassafras bricks would make a very meaningful Christmas present." Bricks may be designated in honor or memory of a child, friend, or loved one. This is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for special recognition on the highest point in South Carolina. For more information on purchasing a brick paver on Sassafras Mountain, visit www.dnr.sc.gov/sassafrasmountain.html. The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has gathered a total of about $500,000 in private donations to construct a viewing platform with an unparalleled view of the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. Plans to improve Sassafras Mountain have been in the works for more than two years and the project is closer to fruition. Architects and engineers have completed preliminary plans for the observation structure that will be built to straddle the peak at 3,553 feet above sea level. Gil L. Stewart Architects LLC of Pickens was chosen to finalize the design and is working on detailed construction documents. The comprehensive project involves an observation platform at the peak, restrooms, improvements to the parking area, a picnic facility, accessory trails, informational kiosks and educational pavilions. "Presently we have enough money to get the observation platform and restrooms designed and built, said Hall. I am willing to contribute.

I really like Jim's idea about honoring the others. It would be nice for EE to have some company.

I'm in for a contribution...whatever works for whatever size brick. Should we consider bricks for Adam, Greg and Gary?

I disagree with having others on the memorial. I'm happy to look at other memorial opportunities and other bricks after we've put together the money necessary for Edward, but let's give the man his due on his own brick at least.

This isn't to downplay others who have passed, but in this organization in particular Edward and Adam were two driving forces of the community and greatly helped the development of the entire hobby. I wouldn't want to see a bunch of names tacked on that would make funds towards Edward's particular memorial be downplayed.

There are also other opportunities we can look at to memorialize cohp'ers who have passed in other areas. As Dave said, Edward was from that area so a stone there for him would be very appropriate.

All that being said, if we have more than enough funds donated to pay for multiple bricks, then it's all good. I just would like to see the first memorial proposed get funded first.

I took it to mean that separate bricks would be purchased, if it were to go
to that stage, but that Edward's memorial would his alone.

Dave: please advise on how best to submit contributions.
