Edward was raised in Spartanburg and graduated from Furman University. He was the most accomplished highpointer from SC, and Sassafras was his final state high point two months before his death. This is a great idea. Count me in. Page for Edward Earl - Peakbagger.com http://peakbagger.com/climber/climber.aspx?cid=601

I never met Edward Earl, but we both grew up in South Carolina, and I think it is a wonderful idea to honor him with a memorial on the state highpoint.
I have been visiting Sassafras Mountain for over 40 years. I remember when the fire tower was still there and the summit loop was often trashy. I am thankful to the my home state for investing in the mountaintop, and I hope to be there for the dedication.

I don't mind the trees being cleared, though it looked rough initially. NC also had to clear trees on Mitchell to ensure the view from its shorter tower, and that turned out fine. The views will be worth it.

I had mixed feelings about the design of the original tower and thought it was silly when they had to scale back because of ADA restrictions. Now that my father is wheelchair-bound, I see that differently. I look forward to taking him to the top of SC next year. The Laytons will have a family brick up there, too.

Hello,

As an in-between-work person, I am willing to donate a modest amount for the cause.
I have seen something similar someplace else.

I would think Ron Tagliapietra would like to be involved. He also has an SC connection.

EE Memorial Paver Stone

Wow. All I can say is "WOW".....

We're well over a dozen people letting me know they would like to
participate. In less than 18 hours from me posting it. Wow......

**************************

It appears that the best way to accomplish this would be to do so via
contributions to the Highpointers Foundation. All donations will be tax
deductible.

http://www.highpointersfoundation.org/

Very simple. Either click in, and go to the PayPal / VISA button, or send a
check to:

HPF
PO Box # 2092
Evergreen CO 80437

State that you wish for it to be a restricted gift to go to the EE Memorial
Paver Stone.

*********************************

If we do it this way, and there is extra, we can proceed on two ways. ONE
-that amount could sit in an account and be noted by Roy Wallen, the HPF
Treasurer, as funds to be used towards the SC state highpoint only, on a
future project. I am optimistic that as 2016 unfolds, we will be able to
work with them (SC DNR) to help with a meaningful project there. No, I do
not yet have any idea of what that might be; I invite y'all (Southern
Speak...) to come up with ideas. TWO - perhaps more appropriately, we
forward ALL funds donated in memory of Edward immediately to the SC DNR
Brick Paver program, no matter the amount, and let them use the funds as
they see fit. Yes, we might be sending them 1.5 or 2.5 Large Stone's
worth.... so what.... all $ goes as each Donor intended it to go, and it
all goes to a very worthy cause.

*****************

Carl Mills asked me if folks should contribute to the designated address
within the email and website that the SC folks provided. I would say "No",
lets consolidate the funds, and make sure they all go to Edward's stone. If
checks are mailed to the address in SC, they won't know to apply them all
together for Edward's stone, and we will lose the power of "one voice for
all the people", a concept John Mitchler always pushes when noting to
inquiring folks who ask him "why should I be a member of the Highpointers
Club?".

In addition, each Donor will receive a Gift Acknowledgement Letter to be
used for tax purposes.

*******************

Jim Retemeyer asked about Adam Helman, Greg Griffith, Gary Suttle. A
wonderful idea, and I really don't know how to respond to it. All are
important figures within our hobby, who have passed away in 2015. Everyone
knows who Adam was, our Webmaster, who passed away in January. 49.9 State
Highpoint Completer.

For those who don't recall Greg, he was a 50 State HP Completer who
passionately climbed 55/59 Nat Park HPs many years ago, and burned out on
it, and "retired". He lived in Jackson Hole WY, and was a close friend of
John Mitchler's. Greg died in a car wreck on an icy road in ID near his
home a couple of months ago.

Gary Suttle wrote the first book on county highpointing for a state; CA. He
was the first to complete that state's 56 cohps. Gary was very involved in
many outdoor activities on a volunteer basis, and was a CA legend. Gary
passed away earlier this year in March after a bout with cancer, age 69. I
have no idea how many State Highpoints Gary climbed.

Please provide feedback if you care to on this topic.

Spooky Mike seconded the idea, as did Scott Surgent. Josh Carlson noted
that Edward deserves his own stone. Of course. I don't think anyone meant
to include other people on Edward's stone. Edward will definitely "get his
own stone". This brings up the idea that we could possibly memorialize
other folks with their own stones. My first thought is to say "no". This is
all about Edward. We could arrange a proper memorial in CA for Adam, or for
Gary. Ditto for Greg in WY. Tough call, as some may feel its important to
honor those fine men. Would it detract from Edward to have other stones
nearby memorializing others? I can't answer that. Edward was very close
to Adam, knew Gary and was a very early CA cohp completer, and like Greg
was passionate about Nat Park HPs, having been to 30 of them, mostly the
ones with significant prominence.

The first question anyone will ask me is "OK Dave, where are we at?".... So
far, 16 people have pledged. Some have pledged a specific amount, others
just have said "I'm in!". I believe we will reach the Large Stone $1,000
mark easily I imagine. Yes, additional funds could go towards helping to
memorialize other highpointers. Yes, additional funds could be restricted
to go towards future projects at Sassafras. I say this hesitantly, as
folks may think "well, enough has been contributed, I don't need to chip
in"..... I would like to note that not only is the $ going to memorialize
our friend Edward, but it is going to a good underlying cause; that of
providing funds to assist with the summit platform project atop a state
highpoint. Many of us turned to County Highpointing, Prom Pointing, Park
Pointing, whatever, AFTER we had been exposed to peakbagging via State
Highpoints. A few folks will chime in that they didn't develop their
interest in that manner, but the vast majority of us did so.

Is it appropriate to memorialize Adam and Gary from CA and Greg from WY
with a stone in SC ? maybe, maybe not. I wish there was more time to
figure this all out. If anyone has a thought on the matter, please chime
in to the Yahoo Post so that all will see it. For now I want to focus on a
memorial stone for Edward.

Before anyone comes up with the question/concept, I would like to throw
this out there; Yes, I believe we could do a second Large Stone for Edward,
likely contiguous to the first, to devote additional text to his legacy.
That would require a second one thousand dollars. I have a call in to the
SC DNR guy to ask if they could design the various sized bricks such that
two large ones could be contiguous.

****************************

Beckie has reminded me to note that all amounts are welcome. Please, do not
be intimidated by seeing others discussing 3-digit figures. $10 or $20 is
a wonderful gift too. This is a difficult time of year. We are all trying
to make ends meet after holiday gifting season....

*********************

I apologize profusely for the timing of this. It simply didn't occur to me
until a few days ago, and was spurred by a reminder email from Mark Hall
that his Brick Program was coming to a close. I thought he would continue
it into the Spring.

I have included Edward's brother Jim Earl on the email thread yesterday.
Jim lives in Livingston MT, and was a climbing and rafting guide for years.
Jim helped out on the climb of Granite Peak in 2002 which included, Edward,
Adam, Scott Surgent, Mike Coltrin, Chuck Bickes, Beckie Covill, Jennifer
Roach, Kevin Williamson, me. A memorable climb indeed...

*********************

Some have asked me "what will the stone say?" I haven't given it a great
deal of thought yet, but Greg Slayden has written a wonderful obit to
Edward on Edward's perhaps Home Page on Peakbagger, com

http://www.peakbagger.com/climber/climber.aspx?cid=601

I believe that Edward would not want anything boastful about his
accomplishments, anything grandiose like a bronze bust of his likeness,
anything gaudy touting his genius etc. I think it would be appropriate to
discuss what he was passionate about, and what he managed to do in his
climbing career that was cut short so tragically.

I think we can carve this 783 words on PB into something concise and
meaningful. Recall that we have 6 Lines and about 23 characters per line.
That adds up to around 138 characters max, including spaces, so perhaps
20-30 words. Tough job to condense Edward into that....

**********************

Stay warm and safe.

Several names have been mentioned for possible memorials in addition to EE, which I think is a great thought that should be pursued. I might suggest another name for such an honor unless it has already been done and I just dont know: Bob Martin. His would pretty much belong in AZ I suspect, even though he spent summers in CO and did amazing things there too.

Thoughts?

Bob

Sort of a legends section for our gang. If multiple stones come to fruition, we should try to have them put together.

Dave's original idea was to have a paver for EE since he was from SC but the response from this group has been overwhelmingly supportive of not only recognizing EE but also several others who were such a big part of the CoHP community. I'm fairly certain all had been to Sassafras at one time or another and well, a highpoint is a highpoint. What better place than to have individual memorial pavers grouped together.
As a board member of the Highpointers Foundation, I believe we will be funding a large paver for the foundation with club information on it. The large paver has room for six lines of copy which will give us the space we need. It will also be easier to locate among any of the smaller pavers, which should help in promoting the club.
It seems there are enough funds from the CoHP group to provide at least a medium, if not a large paver for EE with enough funds to provide for a few smaller ones for the other individuals that have been mentioned. It would be nice if each person had their own paver since there are only three lines available on the small pavers for information. Some additional thought needs to be put to this since these pavers are a one time opportunity and of course, funding is also a consideration.
This is certainly an opportunity to gain combined visibility for the club and the CoHP and honor those legends who have contributed so much. It would be a cool and memorable tribute to see all those pavers grouped together at the base of the lookout tower.
I'm in for $100.Respectfully,Stony

I was thinking of Andrew Sharp. He died while on American Twin Forks Peak. I was climbing in Utah that summer and would just miss him at a couple of peaks. Then I read he fell on an alternate descent.

Not to speak ill of the dead here, but I'm not aware that Andrew ever even said a word on the COHP group. He was doing the Utah points as a goal yes, but the entirety of his peakbagging list was over an eight month period and only in Utah. It would seem a bit odd to include him on a South Carolina paving list and even more odd to pair him with a legends list of a memorial with Edward, Bob, Greg, Adam, etc.

I would think a much more appropriate plaque would be to have one placed just before the sharp ridge leading up to Twin Peaks as a memorial to him and a reminder to others as to the danger of the ridge to those who are inexperienced in climbing. In my earlier climbing days I remember the memorial plaque after you cross the snow field from the Hornli Hut to the start of the Hornli Route on the Matterhorn and that sobered me up quickly as to the dangers of what I had ahead of me. I would definitely support a plaque like this if there is interest.
