I'm sure that will happen to various folks including me. Supposedly LiDAR
for NH will come out later this year and I expect a lot of changes in
minor summits, a couple AMC 4k peaks revised, and potentially one liner
cohp will change.

But as I said earlier about FL, the HP was known to be away from the road
back in 15' quad days but the tourist people found it more convenient to
build the park roadside and the Highpointers Club chose to accept it.
They also accept the IN HP in the woods where the map shows it in a field
(may be correct due to erosion, LiDAR?), the DE HP roadside instead of in
a trailer park (man-made supposedly), and sporadically the RI HP roadside
instead of in the woods for private property reasons. I don't expect the
Highpointers Club to change the location.

For some reason the cohp community (with the exception of a certain
retired professor) has always accepted the single state highpoint
selected by the Highpointers Club as the highpoint of that county even
when there are multiple contenders - KY, IL, and WI come to mind. We
might also consider states such as MI and LA with contenders one contour
down. Any of these may have more serious access issues than FL.

I processed several state highpoints over the past year to satisfy myself that we have indeed picked an appropriate point. My analyses supported earlier IN and FL comments about "new" points. I also took an opportunity to process IL and LA.

Well.... 2015 is behind us, and a whole new blank slate of 2016 lies
ahead. I am so glad to see a new year today! As I type, our friends Greg
Slayden, Duane Gilliland, Rob Woodall, Jill Webster, and 2-3 other Brits
are close to the summit of Kilimanjaro, Seven Summit and 4th most prominent
peak in the world.

***********

Greg, with the help of Jim Earl, has created a nice obituary for Edward, on
Edwards PB home page. I think it captures Edward's essence rather nicely:

http://www.peakbagger.com/climber/climber.aspx?cid=601

With the generosity of 35 of Edward's friends from the highpointing
community, we will be able to sponsor 2 Large Paver Stones/Bricks to be
installed on top of Mt Sassafras, the SC HP and Edward's birth state. Many
thanx to those folks, listed below. If anyone else wishes to help, by all
means do so. All donations are channeled through the Highpointers
Foundation, so they are tax deductible.

The address for the HPF is:

PO Box # 2092
Evergreen CO 80437

VISA/PP capability is available on-line:

http://www.highpointersfoundation.org/fundraising.shtml

Edward's brother Jim shared with me a few days ago that Edward mentioned
the HP Foundation in his Will as a place he would like to have a bequest go
to, along with his various colleges, symphonies, etc.

Mark Hall of the SC Dept Nat Resources has agreed to allow the two large
pavers to be placed contiguously such that the text from one can flow to
the second. Obviously, no other large pavers will be in close proximity to
each other, and these two should really stand out. Once Jim Earl has
blessed the final wording on the stones I will share that on this forum.

I would like to thank the 35 donors to date for helping out. I can tell you
that Jim E was quite touched by the show of support.

We are a week away from the anniversary of Adam Helman's passing. Such a
tragic loss for our community, and Edward's death has compounded that. Greg
has created a lovely remembrance of Adam on PB:

http://www.peakbagger.com/climber/climber.aspx?cid=617

My favorite Adam memory is either the ubiquitous blue packets of Equal, or
the instant math calculations spewed forth while hiking or driving. One of
a kind.

Andrew Sharp perished while climbing a Utah COHP a year ago, and is
remembered on his PB page:

http://www.peakbagger.com/climber/climber.aspx?cid=7355

Among other highpointers who have passed away, Bob Martin also has a
remembrance on PB. Thanx to Greg Slayden for taking on this task.

Greg Griffith died tragically in a car wreck a few months ago, and was a 50
state HP completer, as well as a prolific NP HP climber and world explorer,
and his loss is felt by a number of people on this forum.

The highpointing community also lost the venerable Jack Parsell a year ago.
Jack was one of the very early state highpoint completers, and authored the
books on state tri-points and state low points. Esoterica is what we
love, right? Jack P provided us a healthy dose of that for sure, and we
miss him.

As the year has drawn to a close, may we all look back fondly on friends,
acquaintances, and complete strangers who shared our curious passions,
whether they are mentioned above or not.

**************

I noticed Jobe Wymore's plea today to meet up in the FL panhandle soon.
This LiDAR stuff continues to amaze me. I possess that info from the Lee
County Florida GIS person from a few years ago. Haven't had time yet to
go and investigate in the field, but the 1' contour maps she gave me lead
me to believe that this will one day be a complete-able county. The issue
now becomes which spots are built up around new houses, which are real
natural ground.

Beckie & I plan to visit my folks in Naples / Marco Island FL on the Jan
15 weekend, but of course that lies many hundreds of miles from the FL
state highpoint, and a week too late. We are only staying for 4 full days,
so we may not get in any cohping.

The good news is that we plan to walk the New Orleans Rock & Roll Mardi
Gras Marathon on Sun Feb 28. We will arrive on Thur prior, see the sights
in the New Orleans area for 2 days ( maybe some EMC county driving?!? ),
walk the marathon on Sunday, then head East on I-10 towards the FL
Highpoint for a re-visit. Along with Driskill Mtn in LA, they are 2 of the
7 state HPs I lack for a full repeat. One of those very low priority
things I am working on..

After visiting the FL HP, we will drive NW through AL and MS into Northern
LA, and then back down to New Orleans area Tues eve to get ready for a Wed
AM flight back to Denver. On the for-sure list are the Webster LA cohp
which is a NF HP, and Poverty Point Nat Mon HP. I have researched the
general driving path to locate relatively easy cohps, and Bill Jacobs &
Fred Lobdell might advise me of which ones they found practical to visit
with limited time available.

So yes, we will re-visit Britton Hill, and I will bring along my trusty 5X
hand level. I have no idea if sight lines will be available in the winter
months with less foliage on the trees, but I am optimistic that I can at
least visit the area that has been recently ID'd.

It has been below zero for several mornings in the past two weeks here in
the foothills West of Denver at 7,850'. Some snow, not a lot, but the CO
mountains have been dumped on. Skiing should be good!

Gerry Roach & I are headed to SLC UT in a few days for the Outdoor Retailer
Show, to visit with potential sponsors (corporations and foundations) for
larger scale projects for the HPF. Wish us luck. Anyone going to be in SLC
between Tues and Fri next week please contact me.

We will head to Ouray to ice climb over the weekend afterwards. I hear that
the heavy snowfall there has made it difficult for the Ice Park to create
ice for climbing, as the water can't freeze into solid ice with snow in the
way. Hope they get it straightened out soon.

************

John & Kathy Mitchler have been in the Caribbean the past week+, bagging
island HPs, Nat Mons, and visiting Udall Point, the Easternmost spot of
land in the U.S. counting possessions, as measured from the Lower 48 and
proceeding in a geographic compass direction. There is a list of these on
PB:

http://www.peakbagger.com/climber/ClimberPeakList.aspx?cid=2284

http://www.peakbagger.com/Peak.aspx?pid=-40362

Here's to a safe 2016 !!!

Dave ( so nice to see so many of you this past year, may we cross paths
again soon, perhaps in MT in August ) Covill
