I trust I'm one of the 15. If not, please add me to the list!

Hi all:

First of all, many thanks to Loro, who has performed a great service to our hobby over the years, and best wishes on her next act.

Ive taken over organizing trips to the high point. In fact, our first one is being conducted next month. As Ive explained to many who have inquired, Ive
formed a list on a first-come, first-served basis, and Im limiting the first couple of visits to 10 people each. Beyond the 10 who are going next month, I have about 15 people left on the list.

I hope to organize 2 or 3 visits each year, so well satisfy all the current demand by the end of this year or so.

I dont live in the area, so Ill probably be looking to transfer the responsibility to someone else by the end of this year. I have a couple of volunteers
already, so well see how it goes.

As always, please respect this process. Everyone will get in eventually, and a year or so is really not that long a time in the long view. I waited a long
time (more than 2 years) before Loro and I could set up the visit that transferred the process to me.

And of course, of paramount importance, please do not attempt to stealth the high point. That would ruin everything, to say the least.

Thanks,

Coby

I've been very busy lately (like since 1998) and from time to time I will attempt to catch up on some things which may or may not have been covered in this forum.

Loro Paterson has retired after several decades of being a ranger with the Mid-pennisula Open Space District. Many of you know her from the group visits to the restricted San Mateo cohp which she organized. She'll be moving out of her ranger cabin and away
form that area, so we may need to find another liaison for San Mateo. Perhaps Colby can identify someone.

We owe Loro a big thank you for getting so many of us on that cohp.

I met Loro at the Minnesota HP convention in July 1996. The day after the convention David Olson and I pulled up to the "trailhead" for Stony Tower Hill, the Lake County HP, just as John and Loro were getting out of their car. We joined forces for the less-than-five-minute ascent. It was managed without supplemental oxygen but John did don his head net.

I join with others in wishing Loro all success in her future endeavors.

Loro did great work for us. Glad to have met her at one of the conventions or mini-conventions.

It was in May 2003 that I was able to summit San Mateo COHP, thanks to the wonderful help of Loro Paterson. We met the owner who was quite gracious. His future home on (or next to, I can't recall ) the HP was at that time only a foundation. I brought with me two flats of fine Fresno fruits for the owner and Loro. The strawberries were a big hit with them. I sent a thank you card as well when I got home.
I did something similar for the homeowner of the approach to the Rhode Island state HP. It was during one of the first public access days, back in the era when there was significant animosity between that owner and highpointers. I brought a gift bag with two bottles of decent California wine and a thank you card, and diverted the 50 feet or so from the allowed path to place it on the owner's driveway. He immediately came running out appearing quite pissed. But oh, the face change when he saw the gift!
All of us can be ambassadors for our hobby. And I agree with Coby. San Mateo is workable if you all play it right. The owner is actually a very nice guy, but one who wants his privacy and we should respect that. I, for one, am not one who can "throw stones" as I admit that, perhaps, I MAY have actually done a "stealth" in my day. But SHAME to the one who deactivated the San Mateo homeowner's electric fence and ruined it all for highpointers for some years thereafter!

Biscayne National Park Highpoint, Florida
Tue Jan 12, 2016 11:37 am (PST) . Posted by:

Recent inquiries in regards to the highpoint in this National Park resulted in my investing an inordinate amount of time processing LiDAR data to pick the best highpoint candidate.

Andy Martin has identified three candidates in his legendary tome and I was able to confirm the presence, elevation and coordinates for those points.

Taking note of the tepid attitude of the group, and the preoccupation with Britton Hill, I decided to have some fun.

The first person to correctly identify which of the three candidates is the true highpoint, and to estimate the correct elevation to the closest 0.1-feet will win.

RULES: 1) A single entry per person.
2) Contest begins immediately.
3) Contest ends at 1700 (CDT) Wednesday, January 13, or when the first correct
answer is received. (Plenty of time left to check your Powerball ticket).
4) Winner gets access to information with a 14-day lead before release to the whole
group.
5) Candidates are labeled longitudinally "1" (easternmost), "2", and "3"
(westernmost).

Edward Earl - 2 paver stone bricks
Tue Jan 12, 2016 8:39 pm (PST) . Posted by:

With the generosity of 40 of Edward's friends from the highpointing
community, we will be able to sponsor 2 Large Paver Stones/Bricks to be
installed on top of Mt Sassafras, the SC HP and Edward's birth state. Many
thanx to those folks, listed below. If anyone else wishes to help, by all
means do so. All donations are channeled through the Highpointers
Foundation, so they are tax deductible.

The address for the HPF is:

PO Box # 2092
Evergreen CO 80437

VISA/PP capability is available on-line:

http://www.highpointersfoundation.org/fundraising.shtml

Edward's brother Jim shared with me a few days ago that Edward mentioned
the HP Foundation in his Will as a place he would like to have a bequest go
to, along with his various colleges, symphonies, etc.

Mark Hall of the SC Dept Nat Resources has agreed to allow the two large
pavers to be placed contiguously such that the text from one can flow to
the second. Obviously, no other large pavers will be in close proximity to
each other, and these two should really stand out. Jim Earl has blessed
the final wording on the stones, and I am sharing that on this forum right
here:

I would like to thank the 40 donors to date for helping out. I can tell you
that Jim E was quite touched by the show of support.

I have received funds from the following:

Merry Jordan Pierpont (I believe her mother Beth is a friend of EE's from
SC)
Gerry & Jennifer R
Mihai G
Laura N
Scott S

Jim R

I have a pledge from the following:

Andrew K
Josh X C
David O
Jon Mann
Charlie Z
Duane G
Dennis P
Darryl M
Rick H
Jobe W

My original wording was very close to what Jim proposed in the end. I think
it will look great. The SC DNR needed to end that program and finalize the
bricks and everyone's wording a week ago. btw - we are at close to $2K
with the money in hand, and the known pledges. There are about a half dozen
unknown pledges. We have received donations between $10 and $250, with many
$50's and $100's. What a wonderful show of support for our climbing
partner and friend Edward.

To the County Highpointers,

I have been following this casually, not closely. I'd like to help out, but
I can't afford to do so. I am still seeking to get a job, earn money and
develop a good career, which is something I fervently desire to have in my
life, but which I am still unable to attain. If anyone would like to
discuss this with me, please respond for a private chat. Thank you.
