Coby,

While I do not think I'll be able to make the February visit (I could potentially do one in March), and may have difficulty making it out there for the next few years, I remain highly interested in getting this one. If you can add me to the overall list, I'd definitely appreciate it!

Cohp'ers,

I know Coby is too kind to point out that his name is Coby, not Colby, so I'll do it for him.

I sent him a private e-mail calling him Colby (we know each other, and I knew he would know I was kidding him), and he responded by addressing me as "Milk." Turnabout was fair play.

Anyway, thank you Coby for setting up the San Mateo access, and I hope to participate in one of the later visits.

Mike (Milk) Schwartz

Thanks, Milk. I get confused with cheese so often I hardly even notice it anymore.

All good.

Good idea Coby.

Many years ago, instead of warning each other about what not to do when cohping, we created a list of ten things you should do to ensure success when meeting private landowners. I hope I can find this list and repost to the group.

Gifting was on the list (in addition to being polite and taking a bath). Also on the list was personalizing your relationship with the owner by finding something in common. I usually mention my rural upbringing (explains a lot) with sheep, horses, chickens, etc. Also on the list was a suggestion aimed at solo men - - take a woman along, it tends to soften the scene. I wish I could recall the other ideas.

Also - Loro tells me she led more than 100 cohpers to San Mateo's cohp. Wow!

I've found bringing a child along makes the owner much more at ease. Not that I use my kids as props, but if they're already in the car with me anyway, they might as well come out to talk with the landowner. If it doesn't have a view, my kids typically are not interested in coming along on the hike.

As for gifting, I usually buy four or five Subway gift cards when heading out on a midwest trip. Subways are everywhere and a five dollar sub is a nice little gift that almost anyone can enjoy. Plus if I don't use them, they just become lunch on the way home.

I found that going with Bob Martin (aged 80+) was helpful when we were
visiting the Texas CoHPs many years ago. He was so friendly-looking and
non-intimidating (and wore his "Hiker Bob" ball cap) that no one could get
upset when they saw him, and he got us permission on many CoHPs there that
we probably would not have got otherwise.

We would often roll up to a property and size it up, and debate whether it
made sense for him to approach, or me. If there seemed to be a lot of
younger guys, e.g. ranch hands or whatever, I would approach them.

We always carried copies of our maps and always told them exactly what we
were doing. We never tried to hide our intentions. Many were so amused to
discover they owned a county highpoint, they were more than happy to let us
go explore.

So, my suggestions are (1) always be truthful, (2) carry extra maps in case
they want one and (3) go with a friendly 80+ year old man.

On my own trips, I would keep a clean shirt handy, and clean up as best as
I could (e.g. baby wipes) before approaching a home for permission. Do
whatever homework you can beforehand so you have some sense of the concerns
of the locals. Find some topic to get them talking. If you can get them
into a conversation for a minute or longer, your chances become very good.
Always be as friendly as possible, and keep the hands visible.

In many parts of the country, no one hikes for pleasure, so they'll be
suspicious of you. Maybe you're from the cell phone tower company, for all
they know. That's why telling them about the highpoint may get you "in"
before they can say get lost.

In cases where I had made arrangements beforehand via phone, I would bring
a simple gift and send a thank you card afterwards.

Not all attempts worked, but I have never encountered an overly negative
situation. If they say no, just thank them and be on your way.

Scott

I always play the military card, and my retired I.D. has softened more than one landowner's resistance.

Most of us have given the landowner our topo printout. Often they want it to be able to prove to their neighbor down the street that they truly do own the highpoint. One gentleman in Ohio had both Bob Schwab and me mail him a letter "certifying" that the county highpoint was on his property so he could lord it over his neighbor who thought he owned the highpoint. When I got there, he proudly brought out Bob's letter to show me.

I have never done this, but if push came to shove, I would ask the landowner if he was a church-goer, and offer to make a donation to his/her church as a sign of good faith.

Finally, there is the next-to-last resort of offering money directly.

Wow!

The Subway cards are a great idea.

Note about bringing children. It is almost always a plus, but during the Wisconsin convention in 200X, a bunch of us approached a landowner. We had to kids, maybe ages 12 and 4 (?) in tow, plus someone else was carrying an infant. The landowner was not in the mood to grant access, and used the "children may get injured and you will sue me" excuse for denying access.

In desperation on my fifth attempt to get access to the Laramie County High Point I offered the rancher who had right to the north section $250 in cash on the spot to just let me hike through his land to get to the point and he turned me down.

That county is really starting to piss me off.

If anyone makes Laramie County happen, let me know. I'll jump in the car
and steam across the state to meet you.

zoom in on FL.

I think we have

#1 9' Pacific Reef Quad
#2 9' Elliot Key Quad
#3 9' Card Sound Quad (not shown on newer maps)

and my guess is #1 (Pacific Reef Quad) is highest at 9.666 feet.

If I win will station folks at the AZ COHPs handing out
$100 dollar bills, until AZ passes RI as most completed state !

CoHPing - what to bring.

Years ago when I plowed through North Dakota, I brought my mom, Pat, along for the whole project. Never once did we have anybody turn us away.

Going way back (Animas) and even now I find her extra handy in being my "get away car" driver. :)

We are verty saddened about the passing of "Mother Merc" Jean Trousdale on Monday, January 11. Jean did so much for the club including founding the Merc which in turn financed many club events, hosted the 2002 Oklahoma convention; was treasurer of numerous conventions handling the registration. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Jakk's Glade on the approach to Taum Sauk. She was on the Club Board of Directors and was a founding board member of the Highpointers Foundation which has done many good works on highpoints.
