Guadalupe Escarpment Trail - 71 miles Guadalupe Pk to Carlsbad NP

My friends - I am most pleased to announce that the Highpointers
Foundation, the HP Club, and the loosely organized COHP folks will be
assisting the NPS, BLM and USFS in helping to form a very cool trail that
will link up GUAD and CAVE NPs via USFS and BLM land between them.

In a nutshell, a new Superintendent took over at GUAD who used to work with
my friend Valerie Naylor at THRO in ND. I talked to him about helping him
with the usual HPF projects, and he was supportive of that concept, but
wanted to think big and make a link-up trail. I said I would do what I
could to support that effort.

btw - there is no other organized trail that specifically links 2 NPs
together, not counting SEQU and KICA which touch each other in CA. Yes, I
reckon you could make the case that the AT links SHEN and GRSM, or that a
couple of others are loosely connected via the PCT, CDT, etc....

I foresee this happening something like this:

COHPers and other NM and elsewhere hikers will field test the trail system
this year. We will get help from contacts in NM I have already made to do
so. We will provide feedback to the Superintendent at GUAD and CAVE NPs.

HPF will assist financially with minor projects such as trail signage, info
kiosks, maybe water supply points along the trail (springs, wells, etc). We
will do what we can to help advertise it, etc.

HP Club will help to alert the world via website and newsletter of this
interesting new development. HPC will be touted along with HPF on various
signs, in pamphlets, etc, and will benefit via an increase in membership
hopefully.

Does all this sound good? I am bcc:ing everyone so Inboxes don't get
polluted, but basically I am alerting the HPF world, the HPC Board etc, the
COHPers, and various Southwestern US hikers, including friends at Colo Mtn
Club, who may be interested in hiking a portion of this trail and can
provide feedback.

I truly think this will be an incredible opportunity for the HP'ing world
to cooperate with federal agencies for a common good, and get a lot of
publicity.

I have snipped a poor representation of the huge 14MB PDF map that the GUAD
super just sent me. He does NOT want the main pdf to be published yet, as
it is a draft version only. I can send that to anyone who specifically
requests it, and can receive an email attachment that large successfully.
I got it via Gmail with no problem. I am pasting right below here his
email to me today. I believe it will not come across to the COHP Yahoo
group posting site, so maybe Andy M or someone can snag it, and make a TINY
URL to it, and post that link soon on the Yahoo site.

If you are able to assist or have a constructive comment, please REPLY to
me. If you can't assist, then just don't reply at all please, or I will be
inundated with emails. You will be advised in a few months of progress as
I work out details.

See you all soon,

Keep Klimbin!

Dave,

As promised, USFS, Guadalupe Mts, BLM, and Carlsbad Caverns, have stitched
together a series of trails and will begin marketing the Guadalupe
Escarpment Trail (GET). The NM Governor was briefed last week and a
tentative ribbon cutting is set for October.

I'm interested in field testing this new trail since some small pieces are
not in the best of condition. Would you or your seasoned High Pointers be
interested in traveling and documenting the new alignment? Sooner would be
better to avoid the heat, and it would be serious notoriety for all our
agencies to have professional hikers like High Pointers out in front of
this.

I'll attach a draft map, but please, it's not ready for public release. I
use Gmail and know it will take a 20MB file, so hopefully this won't clog
up your PC. If you are interested, we can help you since this is an agency
request. Carlsbad Chamber is taking the lead and we can have you at our
next meeting in March.

Thank you,

Eric Brunnemann

That sounds great. Maybe if I'm in NM when you do this I can join in. Dick Oestreicher

National Forests Map

Before I take the time to make a tedious .bmp map on my own, I was wondering if anyone else has already made a National Forest map to color in with MS paint, much like the National Park and National Monument ones that are available for highpointers of those lists? If not, I'll try and make one myself.

Thanks,

-Gustav

This map is pretty small. Those interested can
see it in the egroup files section:

Air Photo Interpretation quiz. Can anyone figure out
what the odd structure on top of hickory Hill FL is ?

On this link you can check out a couple different satellite
views:

http://listsofjohn.com/mapf?lat=28.4831&lon=-82.2736&z=19&t=h&d=y

Google earth has images back to 1995 that show the structure.
The house was built between 2008 and 2010.
The structure does not cast a long shadow, so is not taller
than a house IMHO.

No idea what it is, and googling or zillow
do not turn up anything.

(Mike)
Well, if you go here:
http://www.homes.com/property/4383-baseball-pond-rd-brooksville-fl-34602/id-200012117663/

you can get a better look at the building from a different angle.

You'll have to "pull out" so that you can find yourself on the map. The
structure is SE of where the link takes you.

It surely looks like a structure that is partially underground with
several entrances.

And note that whenever this shot was taken, the "house" did not exist.
