Robeson County NC

When Charlie Zerphey and I visited the six spots in Robeson County NC last year, I noticed that McGirt Gin Road crosses a slight ridge that was not shown on the USGS quad. Since then, Robeson County has added 2-foot contour maps to its GIS site, and it appears that this ridge may indeed be the highest point in Robeson County.

The new area is at 639 McGirt Gin Road and has a 242-foot contour, which is two full contours higher than any of the others. In fact, there are 242 contours on both sides of the road. There is a house on the high ground north of the road and an open field on the south side.

The USGS quad shows six 240-foot contours, but the new county map rules them out. The four areas along Dixon Road (COHP Areas 1, 2, 5, and 6) top out in the 238 contour. Area 4 on Johnnys Drive is 236 and Area 3 on Johnny Rd is 235. I'm glad we can rule out Areas 5 and 6, which were fenced and posted.

I presume all these contours are derived from LiDAR.

Ive attached a screenshot. The blue line marks the 242 contour north of the road. Here's the link for the Robeson GIS map: http://www.gis.co.robeson.nc.us/ConnectGIS_v6/Map.aspx http://www.gis.co.robeson.nc.us/ConnectGIS_v6/Map.aspx

Oregon- Bend area, mid May

Hi everyone:

My wife and I will be in the Bend area (OR) in mid-May, taking advantage of
some deals to good to ignore. I know it may be too early for the bigger
snow-bound peaks, so I am up for suggestions. I will look at whatever cohps
are in the area, plus notable peaks within a 50-mile radius. I like P2Ks as
well. Would Batchelor be hikable in mid-May under usual conditions?

I am not picky. Road hikes to lookouts are also of interest to me.

Thx

Scott

I hiked Black Butte in February (P2K). Cool lookout on top and amazing
views.

Doug has solved the mystery of the structure at the top
of Hickory Hill FL:

(Doug Melton)
>>This is an underground house that was constructed in 1975.

Doug - how did you track this down ??

Mike S. is now determined to climb the apex of the roof
or the chimney, whichever is higher ;)

(Doug)
This is an underground house that was constructed in 1975. It is called
the Hilltop House and for more details you can see below:

Underground Home Details
Name: Hilltop House
Location: Brooksville,FL
Square Footage: 3500
Construction Materials: cast-in-place concrete, wood beams
Year Built 1975
Where you can find more info:

Citation Source(s):

Home Status(s): unknown

(Mike)
More pics of the structure and the inside. I found another pic
somewhere that shows a two-track "road" going into one of the openings,
so there may be a garage of sorts inside the structure. I suspect a
visit to this place, unless it is unoccupied, would not be welcomed by
the residents.

There is an underground house along a hiking trail near Boston, the owner loves to talk about it and offered us water
