Beckie & I flew to New Orleans for the Rock & Roll Mardi Gras marathon in
late February. Finished it in 7:00:04 btw, just missing our goal.

We toured the bayou and delta area, bagged 31 Extra Milers Counties, ate
and drank way too much, visited friends, and oh yes, got some highpoints

A few minor notes on some of the COHPs follows. Some dont need to be
posted as a TR, just anecdotal info. The FL state HP info is interesting.

Saint John The Baptist LA

A few things. This is easy to access. Drive off of hwy LA-18 at open field
just E of bend as noted in previous reports. Cross field, ditch, then up
and over levee itself. As others noted, there is a sign saying it is owned
by a river-related company, and trucks were parked there, although no
people. We drove around a bit to the right (SE) and stomped a bit. I am
unconvinced as to this being natural ground, but it could be, as I am no
bayou country expert. It is high in comparison to everything around. Ground
fades off downhill to the E and S. It is on the river side of the levee. I
imagine it got very wet here during Katrina. Good faith effort. Hard to say
where is high ground. Of the other cohps near New Orleans, all are either
multiple LFAs, or are highly restricted salt dome hills.

Walton FL Britton Hill

As has been heavily discussed at COHP Yahoo lately, this highpoint needs
more than just a monument touch & go. I brought my Garmin 62S GPS, and my
trusty 5X level. It became immediately apparent that by walking in the
woods either directly S, or on the paths to the SE, you were going uphill
several feet at least.

I got a reading of about 352 with the GPS belt high at the monument. 10
accuracy was noted on it. I held it above my head, and it went up 3. Held
it at the ground, and it went down 3-4. Cool We toured all the paths
in there. Quite a network has been built. There are two HP Foundation
benches at various spots along it, and one ancient red metal bench, at the
junction of the perimeter trail, and the best cut through path. The HPF
plastic benches are green and moldy, and next visitor please bring a brush
and some solution to clean them with. I brought a plastic jar register
(nuts from Costco) and left it at what I determined to be the highest
ground. The perimeter trail seems to go around the high ground completely. It
is about a half mile long or so. As we walked the interior minor paths, I
got readings of up to 358, and wandered in the woods twenty feet to a spot
that seemed to steady at 359, or about 7 higher than at the monument. I
left the register here, head high, in the crotch of a twin tree trunk.
Clearly visible. Please move it if you can establish a higher spot !

We walked back to the monument, and again got a reading of 352. I am
pretty satisfied that we walked across highest ground, although it is very
flat in there.

Mobile AL

1 area hill next to cow pasture

2/29/16

Beckie & Dave Covill

Pulled in to small gate entryway as previous reports indicate. Checked out
other access to W and N sides, all strung w barb wire and are dense woods,
but not posted. I hopped the 4-5 rung heavy metal pipe fence and ran up in
under a minute, left a nickel in a tree. Open, easy walk amidst tall trees.
Cows are feeding in grassy fields to the east. Directions are great from
previous reports.

NO T.R. NEEDED

Poverty Point Nat Mon

Flat high ground along faint mound ridges, or top of highest large mound A

3/1/16

Beckie & Dave Covill

Cool place. Easy to find. Park in Viz Ctr lot, which is open 9-5 362 days
a year. $4 pp to visit, but they do take the NPS pass!!!! Sweet.

Walk out and across paved hwy to grassy meadow, meander to find highest
pseudo-natural ground. All has been re-worked over the past thousand
years.. Then, walk up the trail to the W about 1/8 mile to top of
largest mound. 165 high, about 75 higher than flat ground below. Pretty
nice view of.. nothing but flat bayou country. ;)

Good VC, do the movie thing. If time permits, walk N to other mounds.

Webster LA

1 area small hill next to forest road NF HP

3/1/16

Beckie & Dave Covill

A few things. It is signed as FR 828, not 829 as shown on topo map. Got 0.5
miles out to it There is a sign there for Newsone Cemetery. Briars ar not
too bad; went in from about 100 to the left of the junction. Clear on
top, hunting blind up a tree, junk around here & there. Left a penny in
tree. Of note, the road is a good gravel road, negotiable by anything even
in rain.

NO T.R. NEEDED

Claiborne LA

1 area old Athens lookout

3/1/16

Beckie & Dave Covill

Easy one. Got 9.9 miles from 79/518 junction from the W, then 0.8 in on
excellent gravel FR, then 0.3 up decent dirt road. Made it fine in a Kia
Soul, really not as bad as others have said. High ground is perhaps 20-30
in S direction, very flat. Could not do perfect Martinization, as bushes
abound. Left a penny in the yellow plastic guy wire off the pole.

NO T.R. NEEDED

Lincoln LA

1 area small hill next off of hwy

3/1/16

Beckie & Dave Covill

Several things. This place has gone downhill bad. First, dont even attempt
to drive off of the paved hwy at the alleged pullout. Steeply down, to
nothing. No way to drive anywhere. Instead, park back at Ryans
Canterbury Road 0.3 N, or at one of two pull-ins S towards Driskill Mtn 0.3
and 0.4. Dangerous road, logging trucks wiz by, no shoulder at all. We did
the Canterbury road parking, walked to hwy 30 and crossed the woods to a
power line right of way, and walked up to the pullout. Headed in to woods,
made a mistake, followed better path straight after being in the woods
about 100. Mistake. This degraded quickly to nothing. Back-tracked, found
path to right, appeared to be very old 4WD road. Now has trees in it 2-4
in diameter.. Made our way NW up it, some briars but not horrendous. Top
is flat, open and pine trees. Left a penny in tree.

Bienville LA

1 area Driskill Mtn LA state HP

3/1/16

Beckie & Dave Covill

A few things. Easy to find. Signs on hwy. Gated right at back edge of
cemetery by church. Lots of info signs. Good gravel road turns to dirt
after a ways. Keep straight on major road at all times. Better part of a
mile long. Signs offer up options to take alternaive apths up & over false
summits. There is one oil & gas location about 1/3 of the way in, on the
right (E) side. Loud engine running. Another one was audible NW of the HP.
Summit area has bench, kiosk, both in good shape. Nice place, feels
welcoming.

NO T.R. NEEDED

Winn LA

1 area small hill next to forest road

3/1/16

Beckie & Dave Covill

Very easy. A few things. Came from E from Winnfield. 7.7 miles to Range
Road. Turn right (N) and go 1.2 miles on excellent gravel road, park. Gate
is closed, trees growing in faint lane now. Walk ~0.1 up to flat open high
ground. Left penny in tree.

NO T.R. NEEDED

This gives me a total of 6 cohps in LA now. Sad we couldnt do any in MS,
but not enough time. Priority was a re-visit to FL & LA state HPs, then Nat
Mon. Rest was gravy. Cool trip, my first time to New Orleans. Cool at
night, perhaps 48-50d each night and morning. Got up to 70d each day. Rained
on us at Driskill Mtn, otherwise decent weather entire trip.

When in New Orleans, catch some Blues, Jazz, Zydeco, and Fusion music.
Bourbon and nearby streets are best. Get a Muffaleta sandwich. Get Cajun
food obviously, but be sure to score some Big Reds, which are enormous
8-10 count shrimp, each the size of a small Maine Lobster tail or a
Claussen whole pickle. Yummy. Forego the stupid daiquiri machines which
churn out frozen drinks, contents are dubious. Tour the back country,
especially south into the bayou/delta. We took a ferry across the
Mississippi, $1 fare. Cool old mansions, amazing Oak trees lining
everywhere. Go on a ghost tour in French Quarter, or a cemetery tour.

Saw the LA state bird, the Brown Pelican. Saw the MS state bird, the
Mockingbird. Failed to see a Yellowhammer (Flicker) in the ~3 hours we
were in that state. Beckie is up to about a dozen state birds in their
state. 31 EMCs; up to about 1,600 for me now. Passed the halfway mark
during the Iowa convention last year.

TR: San Francisco Bay Area CoHPs

The last weekend in February 2016 worked out for my return to the San Francisco Bay Area in more than a year, so I took the opportunity, and was lucky enough to succeed, in summiting 4 new CoHPs, all located on private property.

Trip reports for each are posted on Peakbagger. Links included below in the order in which they were done.

San Joaquin - Mount Boardman (North Summit) http://peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=624523 http://peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=624523

Santa Cruz - Mount Bielewski http://peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=624528 http://peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=624528

Stanislaus - Mount Stakes http://peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=625054 http://peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=625054

San Mateo - Long Ridge http://peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=625056 http://peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=625056

Some general observations:
1) GPS tracks for the routes and coordinates for the main gates are available for the first three in the list above by request only.
2) Peaks in the Diablo Range should not be attempted in the summer as they get too hot.
3) Access to Long Ridge should be arranged only through Coby King. Please do not attempt to go stealth.
