>>I was in FL this week and made good use of my DeLorme atlas, although
it is decidedly outdated. Wonder if Garmin has any intention to update
the older atlases, or if they plan to let them die a quiet death?

Not that it does any good in FL, but in
AK, AZ, NM, CA, UT, CO, MT, WY, ID, NV, OR, WA
there are excellent Benchmark atlases available:
http://www.benchmarkmaps.com/
(Thanks to Ken Jones for cluing me in to Benchmark)

A comparison of DeLorme and Benchmark is at:

http://www.pmags.com/backcountry-road-map-guide-benchmark-vs-delorme

I also tried out the BM app for NM:

http://www.benchmarkmaps.com/products-page/product-category/new-mexico-atlas-app-for-ipad-and-iphone/

Not sure for NM the app was any better than just buying the NM
Benchmark atlas. But with this app I can download and
cache tiles for USGS topo maps anywhere in the US (using the
USGS topo layer).

The GPS on my iPad (Note: not all iPads's have GPS) will show
where the vehicle is on the quad as I'm driving in, which comes
in useful for making the correct turns. This sometimes comes
in handy in daytime, but is much more useful
navigating at night.

I suppose the next step is to have the "satellite" coverage
available offline - this is needed when the
maps are outdated.

If I could justify it, I'd have Benchmarks for driving and Delormes to use
along side USGS typos for larger scale hike/trip planning...
