John Kirk lists all the USA 300' prominence summits

Hearty congratulations to John for completing this
massive undertaking. I'm not aware of anyone undertaking
a similar sized effort for any other place on the planet -
USA peakbaggers are lucky to have this resource available.

1. Elevation Comparison

It is interesting to compare AK (about 60,000 ranked summits)
with the lower 48 states (about 80,000 summits)

In elevation the lower 48 is well ahead of AK in the
number of 11,000 feet peaks and higher:

Elev AK peaks Lower 48 peaks
15000+ 16 -
14000 13 67
13000 32 777
12000 65 1277
11000 121 1499

Needless to say the ones in AK are a lot harder.
In fact a quick (and not complete) survey shows there
are at least four people who have
hiked the 50 highest ranked peaks in the lower 48,
Bob Packard, Brian Kalet, Teresa Gergen & Kirk Mallory:

The highest 50 ranked peaks in the USA has never been completed
as far as I know. Dave Hart and Gerry Roach both have very impressive
AK high peak accomplishments:

http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/completionh.php?member=GerryRoach&n=50&s=AK

It would be interesting to see how close these guys are to
completing the USA 50 highest, particularly if the prominence
cut off was raised, perhaps to 1,000'.

2. Prominence Comparison, AK and lower 48

Prom AK Low 48 peaks
5000'+ 65 57
2000 1836 1218
1000 9594 6777
300 59804 ~80000

It is a bit surprising to see AK blow away the lower 48 in
all prominence categories of 1000' rise or more.
My guess is that this can be attributed to rapid glacial erosion
in AK and more recent mountain building episodes. The
geologists reading this (like Fred L & John M) can set me straight.

Considering the 50 most prominent peaks, the lower 48 has
seen a good deal of activity recently, with at least nine climbers
completing the project:

Adding in AK raises the bar a lot - Gerry Roach is leading
the way (AFAIK) with climbs of 29 of the 50 most prominent
in the USA:

The Aleutian volcanoes on this list (Shishaldin, Veniaminof
Pavlov, Vsevidof & others) are deservedly unpopular.

3. Summit superlatives by state.

Looking over John's US Peaks by State Statistics page:
http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/statestats.php?p=300
it is interesting to list the leading and trailing
states in the various categories (shown below).

AK gets listed seven times for good stuff
and RI gets listed 8 times for bad ?
