In my recent reports for a few FL counties, I neglected to give special mention to Levy County, specifically Shannon Dillmore's report from November, 2006. Without providing a spoiler, let me say I consider that report to be one of the COHP classics, and was honored to visit the spot where Shannon and his companion did their thing.

Austin to Guadalupe Peak in June

I will be attending a conference in Austin, TX this year May 31-June 4. I am considering driving across the state afterwards to visit the state high point, Guadalupe Peak, roughly June 4-9 (driving back to Austin after the hike). I would be interested in any advice folks have about traveling/camping in Texas during that time of year. Also, if there are any high-pointers in Austin, I would be happy to meet up and say hello. I would also be willing to meet others at the trail-head who would like to do the hike as well.

As long as you plan to camp only at altitude in West Texas. It is way too hot in June to camp anywhere else in the state.

If you have extra time in June the best nearby hike is Sierra Blanco in New Mexico.

I climbed Guadalupe on June 17, 1991. John Garner is absolutely right about the heat. I started hiking as soon as it was light enough to see the trail and had pleasant conditions right to the summit. Bring at least two quarts of water, and three might be better. I would guess that the temp was in the 90s by the time I got back to the trailhead, and no shade. But it's doable.

You may avoid the famous winds that range experiences in Spring, but it
should be dry that time of year. I hiked it in July of 1993. Daytime highs
were about 100 F at the base, but I was on the trail at dawn and only felt
the heat as I was descending back to the trailhead, so it was not an
unpleasant hike at all. I enjoyed it... but as John and Fred state, get
moving as early as possible. It will be hot.

The heat is certainly bearable there, especially if you camp at altitude.

Just realize that the first half of the trail ascends an east-facing slope, and if you get a late morning start it will get hot quickly, with full sun on you.

Its a good 7-8 hour drive from Austin to Guadalupe Mountains NP--and that is largely a function of how long it takes to escape the Austin City limits and our awful traffic here.
I've only hiked Guadalupe peak once in the Spring (April) but I did do a backpack trip (solo) at Guadalupe Mountains over July 4th weekend back in 2005--doing the loop from the same parking lot you start the Guadalupe Peak hike over the mountains coming out at the Dog Canyon campground and looping back via the Marcus backcounty camp and up Bush Mountain.
I was carrying over 2 gallons of water and fully rehydrated at Dog Canyon and that was not still enough water to make it back----I ran out on Bush Mountain but bummed some water off a day hiker who was still ascending the Tejas trail when I was head back down.
The first night I was there a front came through and it was in the low 40s at night after thunderstorms came through. The second day at Marcus, it probably did not get much below 80 degrees at night and was easily over 100 during the day.
My point, as always be ready for any type of weather in the mountains and take more water than you think you will need---because as was said previously, the first part of the trail is a bunch of meandering switch backs fully exposed to the morning sun.
There is a campground at the trailhead area and you can camp too on the Guadalupe Trail if you wish too---the campsite is probably around 8,000 ft in elevation and there are some good wood-fence like windbreaks that have been put up for campers to better deal with the areas notorious winds.
Enjoy the trip! Paul B. Matthews
