TR: Corral Ridge (Calaveras CA)

While in the Sierra Foothills on other business, I decided to take a detour and check out the Calaveras CoHP in the snow. Driving distances that look reasonable on the map must be adjusted based on California's scale, which is huge, and the topography that determines the configuration of the roads. In other words, getting there takes longer than expected.

Highway 4 is closed a little past the Bear Valley Ski Area in winter, but luckily the starting point for Corral Ridge is just before the ski area. I highly recommend doing this CoHP in winter or spring, as the area is great for snowshoeing, and one is able to take a more direct route that reduces the total round trip distance by at least 1.5 miles. Plus, no ATV traffic to worry about, no hikers, hunters, etc, though we did find some snowmobile and ski tracks, but didn't see or hear any engines or movement the entire time we were there.

There are three candidates for highest point, of which only the north and east summits are distinct enough. We didn't bother checking out the west summit as that one is clearly lower. For the other two, the east summit is really flat and covered in trees, while the north summit is wide open, with big drops down its east side and magnificent views all around. Maybe it was the deep snowpack, but the north summit looked like the highest one. For those who are into skiing, Corral Ridge can be combined with a visit at Bear Valley for a full day (or weekend) trip.

If anyone is interested in joining me for a late night or early morning hike (in the dark) on the AT to the summit of Stratton Mountain on June 4, the company is welcome. The early hour is because this will be the first of several state completions that day, and a 3+ hour drive is needed to reach the NH/ME cohp areas. My two possibilities are to start at 10:30 pm on June 3 and summit after midnight, then hike down and get a little sleep, or alternatively start hiking around 3 am, book it up the trail to the summit and back, and then hit the road. Annette and Braxton will be there for the drive, but not this hike.
